Suwannee”whoops” the Lady Indians in a great comeback effort

Suwannee’s Lady Dog volleyball team opened up with a blast Monday, Aug. 30 at home. The Lady Dogs “whooped up” on the Lady Indians from Ft. White in five games. It was a great come-back effort for the Lady Dogs who were down two games going into the third game. But the girls held on and won the next three to take the match in five games.
The girls got off to a cold start losing the first game 19-25. They closed in on Ft. White in the second as they got warmed up and led for much of the game. But they lost in the final moments 23-25. And that was the last time they looked defeat in the face. The Lady Dogs came on strong in the third game to win 25-21. They killed Ft. White in the second game showing their stamina with a 25-8 win. Inn the final match, Suwannee held off an Indian comeback to win 15-12.
Kyla Serrano earned 12 points by herself with 12 aces. An ace is a serve that is not returned by the opposition. Serrano also had one kill, 18 service points and two assists.
Suwannee’s best setter, Heather Benson, has 23 assists with those set-ups. Benson also had seven service points and three aces.
Merlonda Owens and Stephanee Skipper led the Lady Dogs in kills. Each had seven kills during the five games. Skipper also had seven service points, six aces and five assists. Owens had Nine service points and four aces.
Ashley Rose, Suwannee’s tall-man on the front line, had five kills, eight service points, one ace, three assists and one block.
Alex Camunas had eight service points, six kills, two aces and six assists.
Suwannee has a new position for volleyball. The newly created position of the “libero” is being filled by Nereyda Pecina. This position is a strictly defensive position. The libero player wears a different colored uniform.
Suwannee’s JV volleyball team also took out Ft. White. The JV girls played best two out of three. They won both games 25-13.
Look for more exciting Suwannee volleyball at home against Taylor next Tuesday, Sept. 7. Game time is 5 p.m. for the JV and 6 p.m. for varsity.
