Plans are being made to renovate Mayo Town Park with a $200,000 grant from Florida Recreation Development (FRDAP). The grant is funded through the Department of Environmental Protection. It was included in this year’s budget signed by Governor Jeb Bush.

The Town Council applied for the grant in November of 2004.

On Monday after receiving the news that the grant was awarded to the town, Linda Cone, Town Clerk said, “I am very excited about this grant, we have a beautiful park and the improvements that will be made will make it a more enjoyable place for everyone.”

The park, located in downtown Mayo, is used by local residents on a regular basis and the council said they feel like the improvements to the park will enhance the recreational facility for everyone.

The park is the site of the annual Pioneer Day in October as well as birthday parties, weddings and family gatherings.

Cone said the grant will be used to provide new facilities, improve and renovate existing buildings and equipment.

Some items being considered under the project are: parking, restrooms, landscaping, security lighting, walking trails, play equipment, picnic tables, bar-b-que grills, a pavilion and benches.

Cone said the renovation should begin within the year.
