VALDOSTA

John W. Bonnell

John W. Bonnell, a former resident of Valdosta, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman after a period of declining health. He was 99.

He was born Nov. 27, 1906, in Columbia County, Fla., to the late Daniel P. and Mattie Brady Bonnell. He was a World War II veteran and a self-employed contractor. He was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Betty Ann and John McMullen Jr. of Valdosta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel M. and Nancy Bonnell of Orange Park, Fla., and John and Janice Bonnell of Valdosta. He is survived by five grandchildren, Katherine (Jeremy) Scott of Valdosta, Angie Holtzclaw, Johnnie (Jody) Hewitt, Jenna Bonnell and Jared Bonnell; one great-grandchild, James Holtzclaw Jr.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Skinner, in 1935 and his wife, Meta, in 1969.

Valdosta

Tommy E. Delk

Tommy E. Delk, 70, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born on Aug. 14, 1935, in Axson, he was the son of the late Tharpe and Lucille White Delk.

Mr. Delk was a retired plant manager for Colonial Bag Company and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict. He spent his last years at home with his wife and best friend Peanut. He enjoyed spending time at his fish pond and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving is his wife, Karen Delk of Valdosta; two sons, James E. Delk Sr. and Michael Steed, both of Valdosta; three daughters and one son-in-law, Sandra Deal of Maclenny, Fla., Debra Delk of Lakeland, Machelle and Robert Powell of Tifton; grandchildren, Cathy Hutchins, John Thomas Bryan, Tracy Cox, Tina Cox, Don Cox, Thomas E. Delk III, Amanda Delk, James E. Delk, Jr., Jason Delk, Jennifer Delk, Elly Steed, Tiffany Hughes; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Joseph and Hazel Delk of Uvalda, William Delk of Blackshear, Glenn and Claudette Delk of West Palm Beach Fla.; two sisters and brothers-in-law JoAnn and Buddy Miller of Yulee, Fla., and Betty and Ware Gurley of Atlanta. He was also preceded in death by two brothers Willie and Thorpe “Little” Delk and one son Thomas E. Delk Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. todaay in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Skip Van Nus officiating. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Lee Carless Fender

Lee Carless Fender, 78, of Lakeland, passed away Thursday, Dec. 28, 2005, after a lengthy illness. He was born on Sept. 4, 1927, to the late Carl and Mary Jane Fender. He was a member of Ray City Freewill Holiness Church. Mr. Fender was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy M. Fender; son, James Raymond Fender; daughter, Wuanell Fender, and sister, Ruth Scott.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Steve McGill of Nashville, sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Fender, Lee Fender Jr. and Clyde and Kay Fender, all of Lakeland, and Carl and Lori Fender of Tallahassee, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Odessa Baisden of Lakeland; and brothers, Cecil Fender of California and Herman Fender of West Convina, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, in Ray City Freewill Holiness Church with the Rev. Donnie Sloan and the Rev. James Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Fender Cemetery. Mr. Fender will lie in state one hour prior to service. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margie Marie Joss

Margie Marie Joss, 69, of Statenville, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Selma, N.C., on July 21, 1936, she had formerly lived in Cleveland, Ohio and was a homemaker.

Survivors are her husband, Robert Joss of Statenville, her mother, Ruth Brewer Eason of Selma, North Carolina, her children, Anne Greene and George Peterson of Lake Park, Donna Greene and Joe Lawrence of Americus, David and Deanne Greene of Lake Park, Sharon and Dennis Menke of San Diego, Calif., Eric and Marsha Joss of Camas, Washington, a sister, Jean Dale of Selma, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Joss was preceded in death by her father, Walter D. Gooch and a daughter, Debbie Greene Simmons.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at 2 p.m. at McLane Lakewood Funeral Home. Rev. Keith Sandlin will officiate. Burial will follow at Lake Park Cemetery. Mobile, Ala.

Amos McCormick

Mr. Amos McCormick, 71, of Mobile, Ala., was born June 10, 1934, in Valdosta to the late Mr. Tom McCormick and the late Mrs. Clara Wilson McCormick.

He was a faithful member of River Hill Baptist Church for many years as a member of the senior choir. Throughout his travesl, he continuously served the Lord until he was called home. While living in Mobile, Ala., he was an active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church of Loxley, Ala. He was a faithful member of the senior choir and an active participant in various auxiliaries and mission organizations. He served his country for 23 years in the U.S. Army and served in the capacity of security in the Corps of Engineers after his military retirement.

A resident of Mobile, Ala., Amos passed away at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005, at the age of 71. He was preceded in death by two children, Bonnie and Mack McCormick; his parents, Tom and Clara McCormick; two brothers, John and Tom McCormick; two sisters, Johnnie Mae Edwards and Rose McConnehead; one sister-in-law, Alice McCormick; two brother-in-law, Wallace McConnehead and Leroy Edwards.

He is survived by a devoted wife, Ernestine McCormick of Mobile, Ala.; children, Sherrie (Johnny) Taylor and Curtis (Chalanda) Tucker; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a devoted niece, Bernetta McConnehead; sister, Mittie Pearl Russell of Valdosta, Ga.; brother, Charlie McCormick of Jacksonville, Fla.; father-in-law, David Stevenson of Louisville, Ky.; sisters-in-law, Mable McCormick of Hahira, Ga., Pearlie McCormick of Jacksonville, Fla., and Rose Wilson of New Orleans, La.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at 11 a.m. at River Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Brother Bobby Culbreth, pastor, and Rev. Edgar Roberts will officiate. Alapaha

Hazel Moore

Hazel Moore, 87, of Alapaha, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at her residence.

Born Jan. 8, 1918, in Tishomingo County, Miss., she was the daughter of Edward Strickland and Laura Belle Bynum, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a retired school teacher. She was a member of Alapaha Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the Berrien Retired Teachers Association and Triple L Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Jimmy Gaskins, Alapaha, and Joan and Bill Drawdy, Alapaha; a sister, Lourie Allen, Amory, Miss.; and six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, J.B. Strickland.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at Alapaha Baptist Church, with Rev. Mike Gibbs officiating. Interment is at Fletcher Cemetery. Visitation is today after 2 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m. — Lovein Funeral Home, Nashville.

Edwin Monroe Shiver

Edwin Monroe Shiver, 88, of Hahira, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at his home. He was born on Nov. 1, 1917, in Brooks County to the late Frank Monroe and Mary Frances Ferrell Shiver and had lived in Hahira for many years. Mr. Shiver was a member of the Hahira United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a charter member of the Hahira Lions Club, was active in his community, church and business affairs and loved being with his family. Mr. Shiver owned and operated agri businesses in Hahira and Morven for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby McCoy Shiver of Hahira, one daughter, Myra Valentine of Madison, Fla., one son and daughter in law, Jimmy and Peggy Shiver of Valdosta, five grandchildren and their spouses, Ed and Joy Valentine of Mandeville, La., Robbie and Teresa Valentine of St. Augustine, Fla., Ellis Shiver and his fiancé, Laura Babcock of Hahira, Bart and Amy Shiver of Valdosta and Todd and Kelly Shiver of Valdosta, six great-grandchildren, one sister and two brothers in law, Barbara and Leland Watson of Homeland, Fla. and Thomas Williams of Quitman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at the Morven Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman. Oren Edgar Tally

Mr. Oren Edgar Tally, 99, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital, Columbus, following a short illness.

A native of Coffee County, he had spent most of his life in Clinch County. He was the owner/operator of Tally Ice and Cold Storage for over 40 years, in later years he worked as an auditor for the State of Georgia Department of Revenue. He was a member of the Homerville First Baptist

Church and was the oldest living deacon and was past president of the Lions Club. Mr. Tally was a graduate of the first Douglas High School class and attended the Georgia Normal College and Business Institute. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was the son of the late Edgar Sidney Tally and Katie Lee Sims Tally.

Survivors are his wife, Katherine Crane Tally, Columbus; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Tally and Kenneth Louis Coolic, both of Columbus; three grandchildren, Frank Keiffer Martin, Jr. of Madrid, Spain, John Tally Martin and Katherine Lee Martin, both of Columbus; two sisters, Kate Tally Vestal and Mary Tally, both of McRae; two brothers, Dr. Spencer Tally of Blackshear and Edgar Tally of Arizona; and several other relatives.

Services for Mr. Tally will be at 11 a.m. today at the Homerville First Baptist Church.

Private interment will be in the Douglas City Cemetery.

Ruby M. Taylor, 85 of Jacksonville, Fla., died on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at her daughter’s residence in Valdosta after a lengthy illness.
