VALDOSTA — Valdosta High celebrated Senior Night with routs of Ware County and Fitzgerald Wednesday night.
Valdosta defeated Ware 60-15 and Fitzgerald 57-15 in dual matches.
“We wrestled two good matches,” Valdosta head coach Benjy Scarbor said. “It was good to win both. Five of our six seniors won their matches. I’d hoped for all six, but one drew a tough match.”
It was the final home match for Valdosta wrestlers Paul Bess, Kamrin Naville, Marcus Morrison, Will Welch, Corey Wills and Marcos Alonzo. The six were honored between the Fitzgerald and Ware matches.
“I’m proud of my seniors. This is a good group,” Scarbor said. “Most of them have been with me for four years. Marcos has only been here two years, but he is one of my hardest workers.”
Against Ware, Morrison (112 pounds) toyed with his opponent, building a 22-9 lead before scoring the pin with 1:32 left in the third period. Naville (152) pinned his opponent with 32 seconds left in the match. Then Bess (160) built a commanding 18-2 lead before pinning his opponent 26 seconds into the third period. In the next match, it took Welch just 1:07 to earn his pin. Wills (heavyweight) ended his match even quicker, pinning his opponent in only 42 seconds.
Tavaris Sharp (135) scored a pin with just 1.3 seconds left in his match, which he already led 17-5. Allen Scruggs (189) pinned his man in 3:54. Herb Reinhard (103) took a 7-0 lead before pinning his opponent with 57 seconds left in the second period. Chris Daniels earned a technical fall, winning 18-3. John George (145) dominated his match, 15-2. David Terrell won 8-5 at 130 pounds.
Against Fitzgerald, Morrison scored a pin in just 14 seconds. Scruggs pinned his man, too. Reinhard won a close match, 5-2. Fitzgerald brought only six wrestlers, so Bess, Wills, Naville, Welch, Alonzo, Wesley Welch (119), Sharp and George all won by forfeit.
In the other dual match, Ware defeated the undermanned Fitzgerald team 54-27.
Valdosta, the Region 1-AAAAA champion, will head to Macon for the state dual meet.
The Wildcats will face Redan, the Region 2 runner-up, in the first round. If Valdosta defeats Redan, it will likely face state No. 2 McEachern in the second round.
“We will see some tough competition up there,” Scarbor said. “If we get McEachern in the second round, that will be a tough one. McEachern, Parkview, Walton and Collins Hill are always going to be four of the best.”
Lowndes, the Region 1 runner-up, will also be competing at the state dual tournament. The Vikings will face Region 2 champion Newton County in the first round. The double-elimination tournament takes place Friday and Saturday at the Macon Coliseum.
