Harvey Edgar Oehlert Jr.

Harvey Edgar Oehlert Jr., 83, of Jasper, Fla. passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006 at South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, Ga. Oehlert was born on Aug. 13, 1922 in Pottstown, Pa. to the late Harvey and Emma Oehlert. He moved to the Jasper area in 1959 from Chesterfield, S.C. Harvey served in the United States Army and served overseas in the European Theater during World War II. He retired in 1978 after 20 years as Hamilton County High School Band Director and worked several years as an employee of the Jasper Post Office. Harvey enjoyed all sports but was an avid golfer and was instrumental in establishing the Suwannee River Valley Golf and Country Club. He was an active member and past president of the Jasper Lions Club and was choir director and member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Pat Oehlert; two nieces, Dorothy Smith Minteer (William) of Bainbridge Island, Wash. and Barbara Smith Ketcherside (David) of Eugene, Ore.; and five great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his son, John Harvey Oehlert and a sister, Pearl Oehlert Smith.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at Harry T. LAKE PARK

Doris Downing Cheek

Doris Downing Cheek, 81 of Lake Park, died on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at Brooks County Hospital. Born on April 2, 1924, in Hahira, she was the daughter of the late Burton and Bertha Barker Downing. She was a sales person at Darby’s Shoes for over 25 years and was a member of Westside Baptist Church. She greatly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and gardening in her yard. She was an avid bowler and Braves baseball fan.

Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Julia and Pete Berard of Dasher; grandson and his wife, Richard (Tiger) and Laura Berard of Valdosta; granddaughter and her husband, Teresa and Fred Wetherington of Hahira; great-grandchildren; Brogen Berard, Bobby, Lexie and Peter Wetherington; sister and brother-in-law, Caroline and Phil Gale of Port Charlotte, Fla.; nephews, Ricky Sutler, Frank Sutler, Michael Downing, Bob Downing, Terrell Downing; nieces, Lisa Foster, Sheila Cotte, Laura Lynn, Kay Morris; great-niece, Brandy Lightsey; great-nephew, Wesley Sutler; several other nieces and nephews and her dog, Spot. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Downing, J.L. Downing, Johnny Downing, and a nephew, Greg Sutler.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ernie Jones officiating. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Sandra Norman

Sandra Norman, 39, of Valdosta, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 at her residence. She was born on July 18, 1966 in Denver, Colo. Sandra was owner of a commercial restaurant equipment business.

She is survived by one daughter, Jenna Lea Mulvey of Valdosta; her mother, Floye Franklin Byington of Lake Park; one sister, Deborah Bonser of Dasher; and one niece, Jenifer Moore of Dasher. Sandra is preceded in death by her father, Robert B. Dittemer and one brother, David Dittemer.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Jan. 27, 2006 at 11 a. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael P. Lyons officiating.
