VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State Lady Blazers fell to 2-4 after losing a double header to undefeated Florida Southern (6-0) on Thursday. VSU lost Game 1, 6-3 and Game 2, 2-1.

In Game 1, all that separated the two teams was one big hit and three costly errors. The first inning went scoreless, but in the top of the second a three run homer off the score board by Moccasins DP Angela Williams put Florida Southern on the board.

VSU closed the gap in the bottom of the second with two runs, one earned. Amy Gaiss’ good base running got her around to third and Becca Aszman drove her in on a single to right field. Trele Edwards made it around for the run after a wild pitch and a ground out to second by Brianna Collins.

The third quarter went scoreless, but in the fourth Florida Southern was able to expand their lead. VSU had three errors in the inning, all of which contributed to the two Moccasin runs. The score at the end of the fourth was VSU 2, FSU 5.

In the bottom of the fifth the Lady Blazers tried to close the gap when Holly Willis drove in Peaches Ramsey on a single up the middle. The 5-3 score remained until the seventh when Florida Southern added an insurance run to make the score 6-3.

The winning pitcher for Florida Southern was Megan Brown (3-0). Brianna Collis (0-1) got the loss for VSU.

For VSU, Gaiss went 2-for-2 with a run. Willis went 1-for-3 with a RBI.

For Florida Southern, Williams went 1-for-3 with 3 RBI. Jesse Shepard went 2-for-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

In Game 2, both teams scored early, but never again. The Moccasins starting pitcher Stacey Bronson had a complete game allowing only two hits and one run.

In the first inning Florida Southern left fielder Natalie Lang drove in the only two runs for the Moccasins on a double to right field. VSU tried to answer back at the bottom of the inning. Gaiss hit a sac fly to center to drive in Ramsey and the score after one was FSU 2, VSU 1.

The rest of the game was silent as both defenses and pitchers stepped up. Allison McKean came in for VSU and pitched 5.1 good innings after Ashley Mahue pitched 1.2 innings and allowed four hits, two runs.

Bronson pitched solid for Southern striking out four and only allowing two hits. Caroline Cripe and Trele Edwards were the only Lady Blazers to get a hit in Game 2.

Lang went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Florida Southern. Sarah Kohlbrenner went 2-for-3 with one run.

The Lady Blazers return to action on Saturday when they host conference rival West Florida. Game 1 of the double header is set to start at 11 a.m.
