AUGUSTA — Allison McKean’s pitching helped Valdosta State’s softball team salvage a split of a doubleheader with Augusta State Tuesday.
In Game 2 of the doubleheader, McKean tossed a complete game, limiting the Jaguars to just five hits and one run in seven innings, leading the Blazers to a 5-1 win.
The Lady Blazers jumped on Augusta State starter Amy Dumas, who had thrown a four-hitter in the first game, scoring three runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead. VSU also scored runs in the second and third to build a commanding 5-0 lead.
VSU shortstop Trele Edwards went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Second baseman Caroline Cripe and first baseman Holly Willis also drove in runs in the victory.
Jessica Matta had two of Augusta State’s five hits and drove in the Jags’ only run in the third inning on a groundout after Courtney Smith slapped a leadoff double to center field.
Augusta State blanked the Blazers 3-0 in the first game behind the pitching of Dumas. Named the Peach Belt Conference’s Pitcher-of-the-Week earlier in the afternoon, Dumas recorded 13 strikeouts without a walk, and allowed just four hits to VSU.
Dumas paced the Jags offensively as well with two hits. She doubled in a run in the first after Jessica Matta led off the inning with a double. Senior third baseman Jennifer Tomlinson delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning to give the Jaguars some breathing room.
Peaches Ramsey, Cripe, Edwards and Brianna Collis had VSU’s four hits.
