VALDOSTA – The Valdosta State Blazers (12-7) squeaked by Brewton-Parker (19-8) on errors and bad pitching, 5-4, Wednesday at Billy Grant Field. The win gave VSU a split with the Barons in the two-game series.
After allowing a single to the first batter, Matt Marchant closed out the inning by throwing two strike outs and looked to be on fire. After VSU went three and out the Barons offense stepped up in the second inning.
After a fly-out to right field, Marchant walked the next batter and allowed three singles in a row. The last two singles each brought in a run. VSU catcher Richard Flores saved the inning with two pick-offs to end the inning with VSU only down 2-0.
The Blazers finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Justin Hill, Scott Brooker, and Chris Harris each drove in a run to put VSU on top 4-3.
After a sluggish first couple of innings, Marchant was near flawless until the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Blazers added another run when Rusty Harris drove in Flores on a double to left field. The Barons answered right back in the seventh with a Travis Adkinson homer over the left field wall. Marchant got the outs and the score going into the eighth was VSU 4, Brewton-Parker 3.
In the top of the eighth inning, Marchant allowed another homer, this time from Barons right fielder Tremayne Harris. Two outs and one strikeout later, the Blazers brought in Justin Lamb to finish the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, after allowing a double, the Barons brought in Harris, who had homered the last inning, to pitch. Harris looked shaky warming up, and hit the first batter he faced, Alberto Castellon. A wild pitch advanced the runners, and after a ground out, Rusty Harris stepped into the box.
With the game on the line Harris watched as the pitch flew past the catcher and Flores was able to come in from third for the go-ahead run.
Lamb (2-0) got the win for VSU, going 1.1 innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. Odie Tomberlin took the loss for Brewton-Parker.
Rusty Harris finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run. Hill went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Brooker went 1-for-4 with one RBI and a run for the Blazers.
For the Barons, Holland finished the game 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs.
Next up for VSU will be a road game against Georgia Southwestern State on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Blazers return home next Wednesday to face Edward Waters, out of Jacksonville. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
