VALDOSTA — Similar themes led to different results as Lowndes and Valdosta squared off on the soccer pitch Tuesday.

In the girls’ game, Valdosta kept the pressure on Lowndes, playing the ball in the Vikings’ field for a majority of the game. However, the Wildcats came out on the losing end of a 3-0 contest.

The Vikings were the ones that kept the attack going in the boys’ contest, but a barrage of second half goals gave Valdosta a 4-3 victory.

The girls’ match was played to a 0-0 standstill at halftime with Vikings’ keeper Marley Williams containing the Wildcats’ attack.

“Marly Williams played a fantastic game,” Lowndes coach Chris Kellog said.

The Wildcats’ midfield and defense contained the Vikings during the first segment of play before Kellog made halftime adjustments to add speed to the attack.

“We went in the locker room and made a couple of adjustments,” Kellog said. “We moved kids around, and put a little more speed up top.”

With 11 minutes gone in the second half, Lowndes broke the standstill as Amber Elam dribbled through the Wildcats defense, touching the ball into the net.

Nina Hernandez then added the Vikings’ second goal of the evening before Elam would score again with 2:51 left in the match.

“Amber Elam is a great player,” Valdosta coach Richard Steltenpohl said. “She’s a better player now with this coach. She gives the ball up and moves the ball around. He’s really made her into a better player.”

The Wildcats played a majority of the game without Danielle Hamm who injured her hamstring right before halftime and not returning until the end of the contest.

“Danielle Hamm going out didn’t help us none,” Steltenpohl said. “She came back at the end though I toughed it out.”

The boys’ game also saw injuries as Valdosta’s Travorus Sanders dribbled toward the goal and an oncoming James Speece.

As Speece met Sanders, the two went down with separate injuries that led to an ambulance coming to the aid of Speece’s cleated chest.

The collision was also Valdosta’s final goal as they came back from a 2-0 deficit.

“We won the game,” Lowndes’ coach Paul Strassburge said. “But, we lost the score.”

The Vikings were a constant presence on the backs of the Wildcats as they were able to keep pressure on most of the night.

However the Wildcats broke free scoring all four goals in the second half.

“None of the goals were trash,” Valdosta coach Bob Blevins said. “The goals were all hard shots that were well earned.”

Ryan Woods scored the Wildcats first goal as he finished a Brad Barr cross in the back of the net.

Barr would later be on the receiving end of a cross for a goal from Jacob Crawford.

Ryan Steltenpohl added in the Wildcats other goal with a blast from the outside of his right foot into the right hand corner of the net.

“They had four goals on four opportunities,” Strassburge said. “We can’t let that happen.”
