VALDOSTA — After three weeks of inaction, the Lowndes boys’ tennis team will take to the court for its second round matchup in the Class AAAAA playoffs.

The Vikings will take on Camden County Friday after not playing since April 10.

The Lowndes girls’ team will also play in second round action against Glynn Academy Saturday.

The Lowndes’ boy’s are 18-1 this season and finished third a year ago at 21-1.

The boys’ team has been match ready by competing in various game-speed drills.

“That’s just a long time to go without playing a competitive match,” Lowndes’ coach Heath Phelps said. “I hope that doesn’t affect us any.

“It’s hard to keep your emotion up when we haven’t played in so long.”

The Vikings have been running match point drills and practicing in round robin scenarios.

Lowndes defeated Camden earlier in the season by a score of 5-0 while missing two starters.

With that knowledge of the earlier defeat, Phelps said that they have a solid shot of making it to the state semifinals.

The winner of Lowndes-Camden will play the winner of Tift County-Jenkins Saturday.

The Vikings beat Tift twice this season and Jenkins is No. 3 Region 3 behind No. 1 Camden.

“If we play like we’re capable and go up there and don’t take them lightly I think we’ll be fine Friday,” Phelps said. “Both the boys and girls this year have real good draw.”

The girls will take on a Glynn Academy squad that played in Valdosta at the Wildcat Invitational earlier in the season.

The Vikettes are 14-7 overall and 7-5 in Region 1 play.

If the Lowndes’ girl’s team makes it past Glynn they will have to take on Starrs Mill who defeated them in the second round of the playoffs a season ago.

“The second round and Glynn is our first priority,” Phelps said. “We have to keep our motivation level up and get ready for this weekend.”

No matter what the third round implications are both the Lowndes girls’ and boys’ team will have to keep focused on the match in front of them.

“The most important thing is what’s at hand first,” Phelps said. “Right now we have to think about Camden County Friday and if we get past that we’ll look to the third round.

“Once you get in the state playoffs everybody is going to be competitive at some level.”
