After a tournament-low score of 308 Tuesday, the Valdosta State golf team rebounded to finish out the Regional tournament No. 7 of eight teams.

The Blazers shot 294 in the third round Wednesday for a three-day total of 900.

Florida Southern won the South Regional with a score of 857 followed by Lynn (861) and North Alabama (875). “I think the guys played well (Wednesday) and came back,” VSU coach Jared Purvis said. “Obviously, (Tuesday) was not the greatest day, but just to be at the regionals is a huge accomplishment.

“We didn’t advance to nationals, but not even a third of all college teams even make it to regionals. That right there speaks wonders about the determination of these guys.”

Also speaking wonders about their characters is after they were eliminated from winning the tournament, the Blazers still came out and played their best golf of the event in the final round. “After (Tuesday’s) performance, I thought (Wednesday) would be the last round of the season,” Purvis said. “I wanted to end on a good note, and they did.”

Freshman Bobby Dyer led the Blazers with a three-day score of 218 including a third round 71.

Dyer finished No. 11 individually shooting a 73, 74 and 71.

“Bobby Dyer played well for us as an individual,” Purvis said.

Blake DeCesare tied for No. 17 with a total score of 222, Kevin Dutkowsky tied for No. 40 at 232, Josh Tompkins tied for No. 42 with a score of 235 and Nathaniel Balanis finished at 44 shooting a score of 236.
