Joe Hendley

Joe Hendley, 68, of Rt. 3 Adel passed away May 22, 2006 at Suwannee Healthcare Nursing Home, Live Oak, Fla. after a long illness.

He was born on July 28, 1937 in Berrien County to the late Malcom and Minnie Isabella Sirmans Hendley. He lived most of his life in St. Petersberg, Fla. and Adel, Ga. He was a retired Bricklayer and Nursery man and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Berrien County.

He is survived by three brothers, R.E. Hendley, Sr. of Adel, Rev. Reese Hendley, Chulota, Fla., Rev. John C. Hendley, Adel; one sister, Carolyn McCarthy of O’Brien, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2006 in the Chapel of Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home, Hwy. 41 South with Mr. Robert Bridge and Mr. Johnny Hendley officiating. BARNEY

Eloise W. Griffin

Eloise W. Griffin, 69, of Barney passed away early Tuesday morning, May 23, 2006 at her residence after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Griffin was born to the late Fleming Bates and Leila (Spell) Williams. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Along with spending time with her family some of her past times were playing Solitaire, puzzle books and Setback. She was preceded in death by a son, Parker Eastwood, grandchildren, Michelle Eastwood, brothers; F.B. Williams, Jr., Johnny Williams, sister, Minnie Pearl Hendrickson.

Survivors include, husband, Joshua Griffin Jr. of Barney; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Chuck Sheffield, Hahira, Janet and Bill Edmonson, Barney; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Dee Dee Stearman, Ed and Julie Griffin, Joshua and Sissy Griffin, all of Barney; 11 grandchildren; sisters, Sadie and Snooks Stephens of Barney, Susie and Jessie Webb Milledgeville, Gloria Trego, Barbara Holliman, both of Valdosta, Lee Garland, Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers, Edward and Oweida Williams, Valdosta, Tony and Gail Williams, Hahira; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 25, 2006 at 10 a.m. in Campground Cemetery in Morven. The family will receive friends this evening, May 24, 2006 from 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to United Hospice 101 North side Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602.

VALDOSTA

Jamie D. Carroll

Jamie D. Carroll, 92, lifelong resident of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born on Nov. 1, 1913, he was the son of the late W. W. Carroll and Christine Davis Carroll Wilcox. He was the widower of Lida Frances Garbutt Carroll who died in 2003. Mr. Carroll was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry and was Senior Warden. He owned and operated Carroll Packing Co. with his father for many years which was later incorporated into Sunset Farm Foods and is still operated by the family. He was also a cattle rancher, real estate developer and investor.

He is survived by two daughters, Lida C. (Sugie) Catikos of Valdosta and Lynn Ann Edwards of Ocala, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, James D. (Jimmy) and Ingrid Carroll of Lake Park and W. W. (Bo) and Shirlee Carroll of Valdosta; grandchildren, Jamie and Gabrielle Catikos, Anna and Trent Coggins, all of Valdosta, Austen Davis Carroll of Vidalia, Josh and Jenny Carroll, Maggie Carroll all of Valdosta, Michael Davis and Lenka Carroll of Ostrava Czech Republic, Tom and Stefani Carroll of Valdosta; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Harriet Ayers of Orlando, LouNelle Heaney and Doris Mills both of Valdosta. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, George M. Edwards.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Peter L. Ingeman, the Rev. Lee Shafer, Deacon Stella Clark and Deacon Patricia Marks officiating. Burial of will follow in the Christ Episcopal Urn Garden. Samuel Jones (Sam) Mitchell Jr.

Samuel Jones (Sam) Mitchell, Jr., 78, of Valdosta passed away on Monday, May 22, 2006 at his home after a short illness. He was the son of the late Martha Eugenia Mallette and Samuel Jones Mitchell, Sr. of Thomasville, Ga. Sam was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church and the Grace Denis Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ethel Ogburn Scott Mitchell of Valdosta; by his daughter Ethel Scott Mitchell and grandson, Mitchell Carl Hebner, of Atlanta, Ga., and by his daughter, Mary Mallette Mitchell Faherty; and her husband Timothy John Faherty. He is survived by his two sisters, Evalina Alethia Mitchell Kilburn residing at the Presbyterian Nursing Home in Quitman, Ga., and Louise Saxman Mitchell Golden and his brother-in-law, Jefferson Monroe Golden Jr. of Thomasville. His nieces and nephews include Louise Mitchell Golden Hubman, Martha Mallette Golden Foster, Patricia Adela Golden Blanton, Jefferson Monroe Golden III, James Carey Scott III, Marion Nelson Scott Sr., Laura Kaye Courson Karas, George Scott Courson, and Mary Ethel Courson Waters.

Sam served in the U. S. Army, 1st Calvary Division, 8th Battalion, during World War II being stationed in Japan in 1945-1946. In 1951 Sam earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga.

He was employed in the meat industry his entire working career. He retired from Dixie Packers Inc. of Madison, Fla., a meat processing plant of Winn Dixie Stores of Jacksonville, Fla. Sam supervised the construction of Dixie Packers in 1970-71 and served as the plant manager for 19 years before his retirement.

Sam was the 4th Great Grandson of the first Constitutional Governor of the State of Georgia, John Adam Treutlen. Some of his ancestors were among the Huguenots who settled in the township of Purysburg in the colony of S.C. prior to the establishment of the colony of Georgia, Other ancestors were among the Puritans who immigrated to the Colony of Massachusetts in 1630 and whose descendants settled in St. John’s Parish (Liberty County), Georgia by 1752 where they developed rice plantations.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, Ga. with the Rev. Cyrus S. Mallard and the Rev. V. L. Daughtery officiating. Laurel Hill Cemetery is the resting place of many generations of Sam’s forefathers. Myrtice Brogdon

Myrtice Brogdon, 86, of Valdosta, passed away Tuesday afternoon in the Smith Northview Hospital in Valdosta after a brief illness. She was born in Berrien County and had lived in Lowndes County most of her life. She was a homemaker, and provided for her children and grandchildren all her life. She was a member of Trinity Holiness Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Betty Zeigler of Valdosta, Shirley Howling of Valdosta, Diane Woods of Cochran, Ga.; sons, Junior Brogdon of Valdosta, Harry Brogdon of Valdosta, Bobby Brogdon of Valdosta; a sister, Lucy Mae Merril of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Alma Browning of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday May 25, 2006 at 11 a.m. in Guthrie Baptist Church in Berrien County with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held tonight from 6-8 at the funeral Home. Music Funeral Services of Lakeland will be serving the Brogdon family.



Doyle Kevin Sumner

Doyle Kevin Sumner, 42, of Lenox passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at his residence. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later time by Purvis Funeral Home of Adel. — Purvis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Grace M. Hill, 88, of Mobile, Ala., formerly of Adel passed away Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Springhill Manor Nursing Home. Graveside service will be held in Woodlawn City Cemetery with the Rev.
