The Rev. Joel Paul Barret Sr., 89, died on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, in Madsion, Fla.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Madsion, Fla. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Madison Fla. The family will receive friends at Beggs Chapel on Friday, Sept. 15, from 6-8 p.m.

The family has requested that memorial gifts be made to the United Methodist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 2525, Macon, Ga.. 31203.

He was born in Funston, Ga., on Sept. 13, 1916, the son of the late Mirabeau Joe Barrett and Ruthie Pearl Cowart Barrett. He received his Bachelors Degree from Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. He had lived in Madison for the past 20 years and was a member of the Rocky Springs United Methodist Church, Madison, Fla. He was an active member and officer in Kiwanis International and Lions Club. He was featured in Camping Magazine for fishing trips and camp dinners in the Okefenokee swamp.

The Rev. Barrett served many churches during his ministry, which included churches in Wilacoochee, Morven, West Bainbridge, Sutton Chapel, Cairo and the Cairo Circuit, Brinson, Stapelton, Zoar, Waldens, Norman Park, Pearson, Cogdell, Homerville, Hamp Stevens, Forest Street, Salem and Remerton in South Georgia and Rocky Springs and Hanson in Madision, Fla. Sixteen people were called to preach under his ministry.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Clara Sheffield Barrett of Madison, Fla.; three sons, Joel Paul Barrett, Jr. and wife Patricia of Fort Stockton, Texas, Mira Lewis Barrett and wife Donnie of Portal, and John Mark Barrett and wife Juleanne of Midland, Texas; two daughters, Virginia Barrett Jarvis of Madison, Fla., and Susan Barrett Dunn and husband William H. Jr. of Columbus; one sister, Sarah Harrell and husband Sterling of Decatur. He was blessed with 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. – Beggs Funeral Home of Madision Fla.
