Voice lessons … dance lessons … a burning desire to perform. It has all paid off for Katie Scott.
From a very early age the aspiring actress, a 2004 Suwannee High School graduate, has trained hard to make her dream a reality. Now, she just may be on her way to Broadway.
“She has always been interested in theater,” said Katie’s father, Ed Scott.
During high school Katie, played a lead role in three different plays with the SHS Theatre Arts Department.
“She was talented from the time I began working with her,” said Steve Johnson, Katie’s high school theater teacher. “Katie was extremely anxious and driven and liked the magic of theater.”
In 10th grade Katie performed in “Playing for Time.” In the 11th grade it was “Jekyll and Hyde.” In 12th it was “Footloose.”
After high school Katie got a scholarship to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Manhattan, N.Y., located on Broadway and 70th Street in the theater district. There, she completed a two-year musical theater program.
Upon graduation she auditioned at the Alhambra Dinner Theatre in Jacksonville. There, Katie has performed in “Hello Daddy;” “Love, Sex and the IRS;” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
Katie’s education and experience has certainly paid off.
“Katie has worked hard and now has her equity card, which means she can go back to Broadway and audition for a lead role,” said Ed Scott proudly about his daughter.
Currently, Katie is performing Annie Ado in the play “Oklahoma,” a Broadway production that is playing through Nov. 26.
Johnson said he plans to go see Katie perform at the Alhambra.
“I’ve told my students if they work hard for me I will come to see them perform. It’s a joy to see the kids sing and watch the plays,” he said.
“There are about 100 people locally following her who will probably go see her perform,” said Ed Scott. “We’re really proud of her.”
“Oklahoma,” an Academy Award winning play, is set in the early 1900s and features frontier life and romance.
The Alhambra Dinner Theatre is located at 12000 Beach Blvd. in Jacksonville. For more information call 641-1212 or 1-800-688-7469.
