Our Opinion: Be safe this New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is one of those occasions that lends itself to celebration. People take the time to remember the past year and to usher in the arrival of the new one. Nothing, however, can put an end to a good time during the holiday faster than a serious accident or an arrest.

With more people expected to be on the roads during the New Year’s Eve weekend, the odds that some of those drivers will be impaired by alcohol rises drastically. It only takes one person who shouldn’t be behind the wheel to ruin a holiday for everyone around them. Planning ahead and making responsible choices with alcohol will remove what should never be a factor in the revelry — risk.

The City of Remerton is taking a proactive approach again this year to ensure that those who celebrate in the city don’t meet with calamity. City officials will be providing free transportation for patrons of Remerton’s bars and restaurants beginning at 11 p.m. Sunday. According to one city official, Remerton had fewer driving under the influence cases last year during New Year’s Eve — a testament to this program’s effectiveness.

Remember, one doesn’t have to meet the legal definition of being drunk to be considered impaired as a driver. Think before you drink, and greet the New Year in one piece.
