Rant and Rave for Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007

There has been much discussion about traffic and the designing of streets in Valdosta. Hello, the only problem you have with traffic is the train. Build an overpass for the train and you have no problems.

It is amazing how the governor cannot find money to keep PeachCare alive, but he found money for education and other popular programs prior to the election.

Please, please, please do something about traffic on Ashley Street this year. Either one-way Ashley and Patterson or redo the timing of the lights, but stop pretending that traffic is going to get better as the population increases.

Perhaps the elections office will expand when there are voters to occupy it.

The problem I have with the low-life that takes the shopping cart to the parking lot is when they run it into my new car. People need to pay attention to what they are doing. If they even care. Wish I could have been sitting in my car when this happened.

I want to say thank you to Dr. Griner for what you have done in the past couple of years for me and my kids. Thank you for caring. People like you come one in a million. You, your office and the nurses on the second floor have been a heaven-sent.

There’s nothing like being blasted out of a sound sleep early on Sunday morning by the sound of a train whistle. Why won’t the city of Valdosta establish nightly quiet zones as authorized by the Federal Railroad Administration?

Until all companies are given huge fines, they will continue to hire illegal immigrants. Some have documentation but most have fake ID’s and employers know this. The excuse of “nobody will work as hard” is bogus. These employers have become rich by paying low wages and are laughing all the way to the bank.

Nothing wrong with wanting a better life; nothing wrong with wanting to come to the USA. Just do both legally. If I break our laws, I risk going to jail. If a foreigner breaks our laws, the foreigner risks being deported. Step one is to come here legally.

I appreciate the officer’s rant regarding citizens who run red lights. Not only are there way too many people who cut it a little close by scooting through the light as it turns red, but it’s not rare anymore for me to see people cruise through red lights that have been red long enough for many cars with the right of way to begin proceeding through the intersection. Highway 84 at Norman Drive is very scary when it comes to this.

I have no dog, but I would rather the dog owners stop walking their dogs on the middle school track. The sign plainly says no animals. How do you think the students feel stepping in poop the next morning? I hope people report it when they see it, I do. I love animals, but the track is not the place. Please, Valdosta, put in a dog park.

With the onset of the new year, we challenge all motorists who litter roadways to start showing some respect for your community and properly dispose your trash. Keeping your neighborhood clean has an immediate positive effect on how it’s perceived and raises the standards and expectations of everyone.

A big thank you to Benny Cole of Cole Appliances for being so honest and helpful in finding our parts needed. It is nice to have him locally and have someone who is reasonable. Thank you.
