For the second year in a row, the Suwannee High softball team has had to work a number of games around rain. Last year, only one out of four games was played. This year, games were canceled for Feb. 1, but the team was able to work in three games for Feb. 2
The first game was against Hamilton at 4 p.m. Starting pitcher Skye Robinson, a sophomore, pitched three innings and gave up no hits or runs. Junior Jessica Johnson pitched the fourth and finished the game for Suwannee. The Lady Dogs won easily, 14-1.
Next up was Ft. White against Trenton. Winner: Ft. White.
The third game of the evening was Ft. White versus Suwannee. Suwannee’s number one pitcher, sophomore Dale Townsend, threw a complete game, giving up eight hits and three runs.
The defense did well, said coach Jan Schenck. “A few fly balls caused some miscommunication and errors,” said Schenck, “but that’s what pre-season is for — to learn what the team needs to work on.”
Suwannee started out sluggish with the bats. The Lady Dogs didn’t score until the fourth inning, when they scored four. The girls added two in the sixth for a 6-3 win.
Hitting well for both games were junior Chelsea Davis, who went three for six; Johnson, two for three; junior Kalie Baldwin, one for three; juniors Mary Badgerow and Cortney Ross, one for four; and Brittany Jordan, one for five.
Townsend walked four times and had a sacrifice fly. Michelle Maxson walked three times and was hit by a pitch.
All the players and coaches feel a big void in the absence of Alicia (“Al”) Cash, unable to play for now due to an automobile accident last month. Not only is Cash a top soccer player, “she’s also a gifted softball player,” said Schenck. “We hope and pray for her full recovery.”
