It’s unlikely Hamilton County will get any money from the state this year to build the Veterans’ Memorial Park. Planning continues for the park anyway.

Hamilton County asked the state for $253,150 to construct a pavilion, picnic areas and a walk of fame. It’s the third year the county has asked the state for funding.

Lamar Royals, Post Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8095, said the park will “give Hamilton County residents something to be proud of. History will be highlighted for the past, present and future.” He said he hopes area schools will be able to use the park as an educational resource.

Last year, the county’s request for park funding was vetoed by Gov. Jeb Bush. County Coordinator Bob Poor said funding is not likely to come through this year.

“We have a lot of community support,” he said. “The land has been dedicated, and we will continue planning.”

“We have an architectural concept” for the park, said Veteran’s Service Officer Herbert Lumpkin. He said trees have been cleared out, but “without money, it’s tough.” Lumpkin said without funding, the park can’t be completed.

Lumpkin and Royals agree a memorial is needed because Hamilton County has approximately 1,400 veterans. “The park will be a place for families to gather and get out of the sun,” Lumpkin said.

Future plans include the sale of bricks engraved with the veteran’s name for the walk of fame.
