Local growers state winners

Several area corn growers have been honored as state winners in the 2006 National Corn Yield Contest (NCYC), sponsored annually by the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA).

Clarence Adams of Jasper, placed first in the state in the A Non-Irrigated Class with a yield of 198.7286 bushels per acre. The hybrid used in the winning field was Garst 8248RR.

Debra Adams of Jasper, placed second in the state in the No Till/Strip Till Irrigated Class with a yield of 206.1191 bushels per acre. The hybrid used in the winning field was Pioneer 31N26.

Michael Adams of Jennings, placed second in the state in the A Non-Irrigated Class with a yield of 183.4935 bushels per acre. The hybrid used in the winning field was Pioneer 31N26.

Jennifer Adams of Jennings, placed second in the state in the Irrigated Class with a yield of 222.6364 bushels per acre. The hybrid used in the winning field was Pioneer 31N27.

Cierra Adams of Jennings, placed third in the state in the Irrigated Class with a yield of 212.748 bushels per acre. The hybrid used in the winning field was Pioneer 33M53.

“The real lesson of NCYC is one of efficiency,” said NCGA President Ken McCauley, a corn grower from White Cloud, Kan. “Over the years, contestants have shown how to increase yields through better planting techniques, more precise fertilizer application and improved seed selection.
