Book review: ‘Treason’ and ‘Hostage’ / Don Brown

This is pure speculation but I have a feeling Don Brown’s solid book sales owe a lot to having a very similar name and being so close to “The Da Vinci Code” author Dan Brown on bookstore shelves. At least initially. Don Brown has launched a popular line with “The Navy Justice Series.” The first two books in the series are “Treason” and “Hostage,” respectively. Brown draws on his real-life experience as a Navy officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) to create novels revolving around Navy court cases. JAG Officer Zack Brewer is the hero of these very readable books, which have him prosecuting terrorists posing as naval chaplains and interceding to prevent war in the Middle East. Though these books are page-turners, the plots are what one comes to expect from series thrillers involving terrorists, nations on the brink of war, and the one man who can save the United States.
