Mary Strickland (Sis) Hailey
Mrs. Mary Strickland (Sis) Hailey, 76, passed away peacefully Monday, May 21, 2007 at her residence in Atlanta, Ga. after a lengthy illness.
She was born on Jan. 23, 1931, in Valdosta to the late Mr. and Mrs. Allan Julian Strickland Jr. She was a graduate of Mt. Vernon Junior College in Washington, D.C., and the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She was a member of the Peachtree Garden Club of Atlanta and The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia-Atlanta Town Committee. She was a member of Northside United Methodist Church in Atlanta.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. William Chenault Hailey, and their three sons and daughters-in-law, Chenault and Lauren Hailey, Julian and Holly Hailey and Rankin and Amanda Hailey, all of Atlanta. She was a loving grandmother to her seven grandchildren who also reside in Atlanta.
Other survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Tommy Hatcher and Eleanor and John McGowan of Valdosta; cousins, Junie Parker, who was like a sister, and Emory Waters of Atlanta and Virginia Smith Massey of Jacksonville, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Allan Julian Strickland III (Bubber) and Frank Adams Strickland preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at Northside United Methodist Church, Atlanta, Ga., the Rev. Gil Watson officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Northside United Methodist Church, 2799 Northside Drive, Atlanta, Ga. 30327.
HAHIRA
Ferrell O. Hamby
Ferrell O. Hamby, 91, of Hahira, died on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Fellowship Home in Brooks County after a long illness. Born in Boaz, Ala. in 1915, he was the son of the late William Calvin (Callie), Sr. and Martha Louella Vann Hamby. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a lifelong resident of Lowndes County.
For many years Mr. Hamby was a truck farmer, growing tomatoes, cabbage, onion sets and other vegetables. He had worked as a carpenter, building homes and duplexes and developing property. Mr. Hamby ran a grocery store on Branch Street in the early 1960s and worked for the Civil Service at Moody AFB before retiring. He was a member of Kinderlou Church of God.
Survivors are his wife of 42 years, Betty Hamby of Hahira; sister-in-law, Katherine Hamby of Clyattville; numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Hamby was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul Hamby, Alvin Hamby, Earl Hamby and W. C. Hamby Jr., and sisters, Lorene Bass Hartsock and Arecia Touchton Reed.

Paula E. Compton
Paula E. Compton, 57, of Valdosta passed away Sunday, May 20, 2007, at her residence after a short illness. She was born on March 24, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio to Joseph and Marjorie (McDonald) Gaudino. She was Catholic by faith. Mrs. Compton was preceded in death by her daughter, Tina Marie Staten.
Survivors include her husband Thomas “Mitch” Compton of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law Andy and Jennifer Corrao, Valdosta; grandchildren: Lauren Marie Corrao, Justin Staten, Andrea Corrao, Drew Corrao and Tyler Corrao; several nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters.
Special friends: Colette Burge, Natashia Tucker and Melissa Thompson.
