VALDOSTA – School may be out, but baseball is still in full swing here in south Georgia, as seven high schoolers make their way to Atlanta for two National Tournaments.
Four players have been invited to play for the Nike Five Tool Team, two players are going to be playing with Savannah, and one player will be with the Atlanta Blue Jays.
There will be a lot of history made that weekend, as six players reunite for the first time since they were 13-years old. They all played together on the 13-under South Georgia Volcanoes four years ago.
“It really is a tribute to Kevin Wagner, who started the Volcanoes,” said Lanier County head coach John White on Wednesday. White coached with Wagner on the Volcanoes.
The Nike Five Tool Team sent out 30 invitations to players all over Georgia looking to continue playing through the summer. Now the team has 20 players and one-fifth are from right here in southern Georgia.
The selections were made by the Georgia Dugout Club. The five local players will be joined by players from all over Georgia, including Athens, Columbus, and Brunswick.
The Lanier County Bulldogs have two of the local players with upcoming seniors Ryan White and Ethan McRae. Both are four-year starters for Lanier.
White, a pitcher and shortstop, has been the Region 1-A Player of the Year the past two seasons and he has verbally committed to play for St. Petersburg Community College. Both McRae, a catcher and pitcher, and White were All-State players this past season.
Berrien will be represented by shortstop Aaron Dobbs, who will be attending Warner Robins in the fall. Dobbs has also verbally committed to St. Petersburg. All three players have played for three different teams this summer: their respective high schools, an American Legion team and the Five Tool Team.
Valdosta High School outfielder and shortstop Taylor Prain was also selected for the team. His teammate, Earl Daniels, a pitcher and shortstop, will be playing for the Atlanta Blue Jays.
“They’re excited about the chance to play on the Nike team,” said Coach White, who is also Ryan’s father. “The hard thing for us is we have only five games to find some chemistry.”
The Five Tool Team held its first practice on Wednesday.
Lowndes will have two players on the Savannah Chain in the National Tournament, outfielder Josh Purvis and catcher Christian Glisson. Glisson played for the Nike team last summer.
“This group of seven were the first to play 100 games of travel ball down here,” said White. “All seven of these guys should go on to the next level, and hopefully have their dream of playing college ball.”
The Nike Five Tool team will be playing today at the University of Georgia and at Georgia State on Friday and Saturday. Then they will compete with the other three players in the 18-under and 17-under tournaments through the beginning of July.
The 18-under tournament starts July 3 and goes through the ninth. It is a gear-up tournament for the 17-under national tournament the following week.
