Two nature and cultural areas in Hamilton County have been recognized as top recreational locations in the United States. ReserveAmerica, a national camping reservation organization, selected 60 Florida State Parks in 16 categories for its annual list of America’s top outdoor locations, including the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail and the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park.

“To stand out among the nation’s most beautiful and interesting locations is an honor,” said Florida Park Service Director Mike Bullock. “Providing Florida residents and visitors a place for memorable recreation in clean, affordable and enjoyable places is what we strive for.”

The Northeast Region of the Wilderness Trail was selected as one of the top 25 Canoeing Spots. After paddling, hiking, biking or horseback riding along the Suwannee River, travelers can stay at “hubs” or overnight camps that are located every 10 miles along the trail. State parks along the trail, such as Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center in White Springs, offer natural, cultural and historical venues, as well as camping and cabins.

Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center was chosen as one of the locations of the top 15 Tours and Events. The park honors Stephen Foster, one of America’s influential composers, with dioramas that show scenes from some of his most famous songs. Several festivals and other events are held at the park each year, including Rural Folklife Days, the Antique Tractor and Engine Show and the Jeannie Vocal Auditions and Ball. The largest event at the park is the Florida Folk Festival, the nation’s oldest, continuous folk festival, which features performers from across the United States.
