City officials aren’t sure, but Code Enforcement Officer David Caban may have been fired Tuesday night.

The city council failed to place Caban on regular full time status even though Caban had completed a 60-day extension of his probationary status.

Councilman Mark Stewart made a motion at the March council meeting to place Caban on full-time status, but the motion died for lack of a second.

City Administrator Bob Farley said he is waiting to hear from City Attorney Ernie Sellers (see below) as to whether Caban still has a job.

“This has never happened before, to my knowledge,” Farley said.

Caban’s probation was extended and he was suspended without pay in January after he violated city policy regarding possession of alcohol and use of a city vehicle during working hours. The incident occurred just two day before Caban’s probationary status would have ended.

City policy prohibits personal use of city vehicles and prohibits the presence of alcohol within a city vehicle.

Sellers is new

city attorney

The city council hired Ernie Sellers as the new city attorney Tuesday night.

Former city attorney David Robertson resigned from the position last week to take the post of general counsel for the Florida Department of Transportation district two.

Sellers previously served as city attorney for more than 30 years.
