VALDOSTA — Lowndes High’s girls track team is the Region 1-AAAAA champions again.
Last week, Lowndes won its 17th region title in the past 19 seasons, and its eighth straight 1-AAAAA crown. The Vikettes earned 157 points, 58 more than second-place Warner Robins, and took first place in eight events, most of any school.
Lowndes is the only school to win a 1-AAAAA girls track title since the region was created in 2000.
Lowndes sophomore Keira Peak earned three individual region titles herself, and was a part of a winning relay team. Peak won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.93 seconds, beating second-place Kaneisha Brown of Tift County (15.89) by nearly a full second. Then she won the 300 hurdles in 47.12 seconds, nearly two seconds ahead of LHS teammate Jordan Bright (49.08). In the high jump, Peak jumped 5 feet, 2 inches to win another region title. Peak wrapped up her outstanding performance by helping Lowndes’ 4×400 relay team take first (4:11.90).
Brittany Britt won two events, the 200 meters (25.81) and the long jump (16 feet, 10.25 inches). Britt also ran on Lowndes’ victorious 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams, and finished third in the 100 meters (12.30).
Chelsea Williams (1:01.4) and Davena Smith (1:02.1) finished 1-2 in the 400 meters for Lowndes, one of two events where the Vikettes earned the top two spots.
In the 4×100 relay, Amanda Newham, Zakiya Mitchell, Britt and Williams won the race in 49.43 seconds, edging out Tift County by 0.37 seconds. In the 4×400, Peak, Williams, Britt and Smith won in 4:11.90, 1.32 seconds faster than Warner Robins.
Bright took second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 hurdles. She and Peak blew away the field in the 300 hurdles; the third-place finisher, Warner Robins’ Antoinette Howell (50.90), finished nearly two seconds behind Bright and almost four seconds behind Peak.
Demetria Jones took second in the 800 meters (2:34.95). Shaunee Roman (6:09.72) was third in the 1600, with Kayla Russell (6:15.64) right behind her in fourth. Russell also took fourth in the 3200 (14:04). Kesha McDougal took third in two events, the shot put (33 feet, 5 inches) and the discus (106 feet). Keia Tillman was fourth in the shot (32 feet, 5 inches).
Lowndes had a second 4×100 relay team (Bright, Jade Evans, Jasmine Mathis and Peak) place fourth. The Vikettes’ second 4×400 team (Bright, Latoya Foster, Evans and Jones) finished fifth. Foster (high jump) and Mitchell (triple jump) also finished fifth.
Houston County, which placed fourth (76 points), earned five first-place finishes. Warner Robins had two winners, while third-place Tift (91 points) had one winner. Valdosta, Coffee and Colquitt County had no individual region champions.
Valdosta had four region placers. Kendra Patrick took fourth in the triple jump and high jump. Keisha Spates was fourth in the 100. Keyannas Evans took fifth in the 100 hurdles. The Lady Wildcats came in sixth in the final standings.
