Garden Center open house scheduled for National Garden Week

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Garden Center Inc. and its president, Betty Becton, invites the public to attend a celebration of National Garden Week, from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, the Garden Center, which includes The Crescent, on North Patterson Street.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will also be served by the garden clubs, said Margaret Cooper, chairman.

They will also have exhibits featuring gardening including an exhibit by Holly Garden Club and Catherine Daughtery on roses. Dogwood Garden Club will host an exhibit with Madlyn Hightower bringing information on vegetable and fruit gardening. Camellia Garden Club and Avernell Rogers will have an exhibit showing beautiful hydrangeas. There will be other exhibits including an exhibit of books and reading materials all on gardening including indoor house plants. All eight garden clubs are participating in this open house reception. The Crescent will also be open for visitors.

The Garden Center will have National Garden Week posters and green-and-white balloons at the following locations on Monday, marking some of the Center’s projects through the years: Interstate 75 Welcome Center Blue Star Marker placed by Susan Rafael of Camellia Garden Club; Amaryllis Garden Club and Vickie Johnson placing posters and balloons at the Langdale Park By-Way Marker; Ann Cork of Southern Charm is doing an exhibit at Francis Lake Johnson Library; Magnolia Garden Club and Ximena Holcombe will place posters and balloons at the Valdosta/Lowndes Library; and Claudia Severin of Town and Country will mark The Valdosta Garden Center with balloons and posters. Azalea Garden Club will feature a large arrangement of flowers on the reception table for the event.

Other events open and free to the public will be the 80th anniversary of the Garden Clubs of Georgia. An afternoon reception will be held in The Crescent by The Garden Center Inc., 3 to 5 p.m., June 8. Everyone is invited to attend this event and enjoy refreshments with the garden clubs of Valdosta.
