Lowndes votes to continue planning commission

The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a Greater Lowndes Planning Commission Joint Ordinance and Agreement as presented Tuesday.

Approval of the measure is necessary for the continuation of the Lowndes County Planning Commission, which was created in 1996 by leaders of Lowndes County and the cities of Hahira, Lake Park, Valdosta and Dasher. All parties — Remerton having been recently added — have until Dec. 31 to adopt the ordinance and agreement.

The board also unanimously approved renewing the lease on the Department of Human Resources’ Children and Family Services building at 206 S. Patterson St., the request to submit the Citizens Corp grant application, and the Lowndes County Judicial System Complex change order. Two of the zoning requests originally brought before the board were withdrawn and the other, a rezoning request for property located between Old Quitman Highway and Spain Ferry Road was approved with conditions.

Chairman Rod Casey presented the award given by the Georgia Planning Association for Outstanding Planning Process to the Lowndes County Technical Review Committee.
