Lowndes’ track teams win home meets

VALDOSTA — The Lowndes High boys and girls track and field teams defeated other area schools in meets earlier this week.
On Wednesday, Lowndes’ boys won their meet, earning 127 points. Tift County was second with 84 points. Valdosta finished in third with 51 points, Coffee finished fourth with 35 points and Cook finished fifth with 18 points.
Lowndes’ Telvin Smith, also a linebacker for the Vikings’ football team, won the 400 meter dash in a time of 52.91 seconds.
Chris Mobley of Lowndes won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.94 seconds.
Lowndes’ Khary Franklin, also the football team’s quarterback, finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.84 seconds. Usain Bolt of Jamaica is the world record holder in the event with a time of 9.69 seconds.
The Lowndes girls won their meet by tallying 96 points. The Vikettes edged Tift County, which scored 90 points. Valdosta came in third with 41 points, Cook placed fourth with 41 points and Coffee finished fifth with 27 points.
Lowndes’ Kiera Peak won the 100 meter hurdles (in 15:40) and 300 meter hurdles (47:41). Peak finished second in the high jump, leaping five feet. Peak is also a standout for the LHS basketball team.
Peak helped Lowndes win the 4×100 meter relay in a time of 50.14 seconds, along with Amanda Newham, Brittany Britt and Lakeshia Jones.
Peak also helped Lowndes win the 4×400 meter relay, along with Hayley Pinkerton, Britt and Jones, in 4:33.97. Lowndes’ B relay team (Meagan Evans, Morgan Davis, Davena Smith and Shelaia Cook) took second (4:40.38) and the Vikettes’ third relay team (Newham, Maiah Talmage, Jasmine Mathis and Neisha Austin) was third (4:47.60).
Pinkerton won the 1600 meter run with a time of 6:06.40, and was third in the 800 (2:42.56). Cook was third in the 1600 (6:28).
Britt won the girls long jump with a height of 5.10 meters and took third in the 200 (27:06). Jones finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.62 seconds.
Lowndes’ boys and girls track team will be back in action today at 9 a.m. at the Cairo Invitational in Cairo.
The two teams will compete again at home on Tuesday against Colquitt, Cook and Valdosta at 4 p.m.
