Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA) recently announced that Valdosta State University’s College of Nursing has been named as the recipient of a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Funds from the grant will be used to aid master’s students enrolled in advanced practice nursing coursework or part-time master’s students who will graduate prior to June 2010.

“I congratulate Dr. Hufft and the VSU College of Nursing for their strong nursing program and for securing the funding that will take their students to the next level through the nurse practitioner program,” Kingston said.

“These types of grants are essential in developing a strong health care workforce through training and education and I am proud to see VSU be able to continue this type of work.”

The amount of the grant is $25,656 and will be used to fund advanced education nursing traineeships. Enrollment in the nursing program has dramatically increased in the past several years with six students recently graduating from the first nurse practitioner program at VSU that began in 2007.

“This is critical support for the preparation of our advanced practice nurses and nurse educators in the state of Georgia,” said Dr. Anita Hufft, dean of the College of Nursing. “I would like to especially thank Dr. Jean Temple for the preparation of this grant and our legislators for their continued support of Title 8 funding.”

The mission of the faculty of the VSU College of Nursing is to improve the health care of the region through the preparation of a professional nursing workforce characterized by enthusiasm, skill, knowledge and honor. The College of Nursing is located in S. Walter Martin Hall at 1300 N. Patterson St. in Valdosta.
