A 30-day investigation by Live Oak police revealed that a local nightspot has run afoul of city rules concerning alcohol, says LOPD Chief Buddy Williams.
“The Big B or Ms. D’s Cozy Corner is clearly a bar operating under a restaurant license,” said Williams. “It is my request that the restaurant license be suspended and a bar license be issued to this business. I feel this will help curtail any future problems that may arise at this location.”
Williams said the Big B has imposed a $5 cover charge, in violation of its restaurant license. In addition, officers on two occasions reportedly counted more than 70 customers leaving the building which has a maximum occupancy of 60. Smoking is also reportedly allowed in the establishment, a violation of state law.
Live Oak City Council President John Hale said he doesn’t want the business shut down but does want it to follow the rules.
“I think they need to follow the regulations others are following,” Hale said by phone Monday. “I don’t want to see them closed down but they are going to have to fall in line and follow ordinances.”
The city council will take up the issue July 14 at its next regular meeting.
After numerous complaints from nearby homeowners, Williams had officers conduct a 30-day investigation of the Walker Avenue establishment. Three officers observed the Big B Thursday through Saturday. The detail lasted through the end of May. Williams said that officers were called to the Big B 48 between January and June 9, when his report was released.
The Big B’s owners were not available for comment.
