VALDOSTA — Three of the five candidates for the Valdosta City Council District 2 seat must provide proof of residency today in order to remain on the ballot.

Candidate David L. Dempsey, according to information from the Lowndes County Board of Elections, has filed a qualification challenge against three other District 2 candidates — Deidra A. White, Rodney R. Flucas and David G. DeMersseman. He did not file a qualification challenge against Dr. L.W. Williams.

“He’s challenging their statement of residency as listed on their qualifying form,” reported Deb Cox, Lowndes County supervisor of elections.

The Lowndes County Board of Elections will hold a hearing on Dempsey’s qualification challenges at 4:30 p.m. today in its offices at 2808 N. Oak St.

Cox noted that White, Flucas and DeMersseman will have the opportunity to present their proof of residency. Dempsey will have a chance to rebut.

Afterwards, Cox said the board will either make a decision immediately or postpone a decision for a short amount of time.

The Valdosta City Council District 2 position is currently held by Willie T. Head Jr. He announced recently that he will not seek re-election.

A total of 33 people qualified to have their names placed on the ballot for various offices.

When the Nov. 3 election comes and goes, a total of nine incumbents will return to office — barring any big surprises. Alvin Payton Jr. of Valdosta City Council District 4, Mayor David W. Bullard Sr. of Hahira, Mayor Kenneth E. Allen of Dasher, Julian Q. Copeland Jr. of Dasher City Council Post 1, Mayor Walter K. Sandlin of Lake Park and Albert R. Carter, Paul R. Mulkey, Eric Schindler and Jeffery L. Spradley of the Lake Park City Council are all running unopposed.

Vanessa L. Flucas is also running unopposed for the Valdosta Board of Education District 2 seat. She is not an incumbent, just a newcomer to the political scene.

In accordance with the Official Code of Georgia’s Section 21-2-285j, the unopposed candidates will be certified on Nov. 6.

Names voters will not see on their Nov. 3 ballots include Head and other incumbents Willie Jones and Ricky Rowe of Superward East District 7 and Superward West District 8, respectively, of the Valdosta Board of Education.
