For the second year in a row, Stan Gann Jr. is the Valdosta Open champion.

Gann shot a 68 on Sunday, and won his second consecutive Valdosta Open. His two-round total of 139 earned him a one-stroke victory at the Valdosta Country Club.

“I shot 32 on the back. I played good,” Gann said. “I made a few putts from off the green. I got it in the hole when I needed to.

“I hit the ball great all day, and made a few putts.”

Gann had five birdies and just one bogey Sunday.

Gann, who lives in Bonaire (near Warner Robins), earned a check for $2,500 for his victory.

Last year, Gann tied with amateur Jason Personette for first place. This year, he had first place all to himself.

Sam Hogan was the amateur champion. It was the fourth time that Hogan had been the Valdosta Open’s top amateur. He has also won the Jack Oliver Invitational three times at the Valdosta Country Club.

Hogan entered the day tied for ninth, eight strokes behind the leader, but shot a 66 (the lowest round of the tournament) on Sunday, and earned a one-shot victory. He made six birdies on Sunday, and finished with a two-round score of 141.

“I’m very happy,” Hogan said. “I hit it good yesterday, I just didn’t make any putts. Today, everything went in.”

Hogan credited Valdosta Country Club golf pro Rob Williams for helping him with his stroke.

“I can’t say enough about Rob. He’s really helped me a lot,” Hogan said.

Hogan received a $750 gift certificate to the Valdosta Country Club’s pro shop.

Chesley Gunn, who recently completed his college career at Valdosta State, shot a 69 on Sunday and finished second in the amateur standings at 142, one stroke behind Hogan. Alan Hampton finished third, one shot behind Gunn. Will Repko and first-round leader David Hobby tied for fourth at 145.

David Matthews was sixth in the amateur competition with a 147, followed by Phil Alday (149). Taylor Cooksey, J.B. Wilson and Steve Forbess tied for eighth at 150.

Kenny Knox, a Champions Tour player who has won three PGA Tour tournaments in his career, finished second in the professional standings with a 140, and received a $1,000 check.

Brandon Anthony and Andrew Stephens (who tied Hogan for the low round of the tournament with a 66) tied for third in the professional standings with a 141. Jason Jones was fifth with a 142, and Chris Dixon was one shot behind him. Carl Hay and Kevin Belza tied for seventh at 144, and Edward Hollis and Andrew Suggs tied for ninth at 145.

The top 10 professional golfers earned checks, while the top 12 amateurs received gift certificates to VCC’s pro shop.

There were also 41 teams competing in the final round of the Valdosta Open’s two-man scramble on Sunday.

Greg Blais and Nic Daugharty were the best two-man team on the course for the second day in a row. Blais and Daugharty followed up their 62 on Saturday by shooting a 60 on Sunday. Their two-round total of 122 won the first flight by five strokes.

Greg Reid and Greg Hunter finished second in the first flight with a 127, shooting a 62 on Sunday. Matthew Smith and Tatum Davis placed third with a 131, and won a tiebreaker over Bill Adams and David Elder, who also shot a 131 and were fourth.

Ken Adams and Joe Knapp shot a 62 on Sunday, and won the second flight by four strokes with a 127. Stephen and Scott Chaney were second with a 131, Bubba Highsmith and Mike Drumheller III finished third with a 134 and John Alday and Danny Knight took fourth with a 135.

In the third flight, Eric Kolisz and Tommy Hobby won by one stroke with a 133. John Dennis Wetherington and Mike Henderson took second with a 134, followed by Mabry Smith and Trey Odom, who also finished at 134. Ted Welch and Lee Redish finished fourth with a 138.

Charlie Baker and Jeffery Crawford won the fourth flight with a 135. Sam Wishon and Larry Roberts took second with a 136, followed by Joe Brogdon and Charlie Watson with a 139 and Mike Drumheller Jr. and Jason Ellis with a 140.

Michael and David Tew won the fifth flight with a 135. David Sule and Craig Klements were second with a 139. Danny Emrich and Steve Groom finished third with a 141, followed by Eddie Freeman and Robert Braswell with a 146 and Hernando Moreno and Marcus Mullis with a 149.

The top four finishers in each flight of the two-man scramble (and the fifth-place team in the fifth flight) received gift certificates to the VCC pro shop.

The Valdosta Open raised a large sum of money for the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta. All of the proceeds from the tournament went directly to the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta, a non-profit organization, to help with operating expenses.
