Ashley Braswell, the Lowndes County Community Manager of the American Cancer Society, estimated that the tournament had raised over $25,000 for the ACS and its fight against cancer.

“It turned out great,” longtime tournament chairman Ashley Paulk said.

All of the money raised from the tournament will go to the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society gives around $100 million a year towards fighting cancer, with most of that money going towards research.

The Georgia Power team won the first flight of the four-man scramble tournament. Georgia Power players Marshall Conner, Larry Taylor, Darrell Wilder and Mike Chase shot a 55.

The Henderson Godbee, LLP team (Kevin Hiers, Scott Simpson, Jared McGahee and Justin Smothers) finished second in the first flight with a 56. Valdosta Mechanical (Bryan Stewart, Chris Baker, Dumas Bennett and Charlie Cosey) and the Tunison Team (Jim Tunison, Jamie Harris, Richard Campbell and Ted Welch) tied for third at 57.

The Farmers and Merchants Bank team of Alex Lee, Sam Shaw, Jimmy Benefield and Rick Haskew shot a 55, and won the second flight.

There was a three-way tie for second place in the second flight between Sunset Farms (Chris LaMontagne, Jason Braswell, Cliff Baker and Chip Back), Valdosta Insurance Services (Andy Miller, Mike Delaney, Russ Butler and Neil Johnson) and Langdale Ford (Steve Everett, Mark Howell, Jeff Sikes and Brad Adams). All three teams shot a 58.

Taylor Insurance (Trent Taylor, Matt Bradshaw, Holly Taylor and Neil Roundtree) won the third flight with a 64. Valdosta Lighting (Scott James, J.D. Yeager, Herb Bennett and Chris Williams) was second with a 66, followed by A&M Electric (Tony Marshall, Jimmy Durst, Justin Burt and Brian Townsend) with a 69.

On Wednesday, Kevin Shepard won the closest to the hole competition on the eighth hole, while Scott Fletcher had the longest drive on the 18th hole. On Thursday, Travis Pate was closest to the hole on No. 8, and J.J. Mahaffey had the longest drive at No. 18. On Friday, Jimmy Benefield was closest to the hole and Mike Chase had the longest drive.

American Cancer Society golf tournaments take place all over the United States. For over three decades, there have been golf tournaments in Valdosta to raise money for the fight against cancer.

“American Cancer Society golf tournaments provide players of all skill levels an outstanding golf experience and the opportunity to support cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient service programs in local communities,” the American Cancer Society’s Web site says.
