- Valdosta's Malcolm Mitchell (26) runs past a pair of Hardaway defenders, thanks in part to a block by left tackle Willie Barrett (78), earlier in September at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
Last Friday night, Valdosta High won a classic football game, 64-62, over Brunswick.
The Wildcats and the Pirates put up a lot of impressive numbers in the game, including 126 points and 1,165 yards of total offense between them.
Some of the most impressive individual numbers were posted by Valdosta wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell. Mitchell caught five passes for 196 yards, and scored two touchdowns in the Wildcats’ victory. He also caught a two-point conversion pass.
For his performance, Mitchell has been chosen The Valdosta Daily Times’ Player of the Week.
Nearly every catch Mitchell made last Friday turned out to be a big one. Mitchell’s catches went for 67, 54, 33, 26 and 16 yards. Two of those catches went for touchdowns. Two more catches helped set up Wildcat touchdowns.
“Malcolm played an excellent game,” Valdosta head coach Rance Gillespie said. “He stepped up, and made play after play after play.”
“I think I played pretty good,” Mitchell said. “I enjoyed it. I had fun doing what I was doing. I’m glad I could help the team win.”
Mitchell’s first catch came midway through the first quarter, at a point when the Wildcats needed a big play. Valdosta was trailing 12-0 and facing second-and-10 at their own 8-yard line when quarterback Ryan Whilden found Mitchell for 33 yards. The catch seemed to fire up Valdosta’s offense, because the next three plays (a Phillip Moore run, a pass from Whilden to Jay Rome and another Moore run) went for 22, 12 and 16 yards, respectively, and three plays later, Whilden scored on a quarterback sneak.
Valdosta scored on its next possession, on Justin Williams’ 1-yard run. Then the Wildcats tried the two-point conversion, and Whilden found Mitchell near the goal line. As a defender was trying to tackle him, Mitchell stretched the ball over the goal line to give the Wildcats two more points, and increase their lead to 15-12.
The next time Mitchell caught the ball was on the Wildcats’ opening possession of the second half. On first-and-10 from the Brunswick 26, Whilden rolled out and fired a pass towards the end zone that Mitchell hauled in for a touchdown, giving Valdosta a 29-24 lead.
Valdosta’s Devontae Foster intercepted a pass on Brunswick’s ensuing drive. Three plays later, on third-and-8 from the Valdosta 46, Mitchell leaped and caught a pass from Whilden. The defensive back covering Mitchell also went for the ball, and was slightly out of position to make a tackle. Mitchell got past the defensive back, then raced into the end zone for a 54-yard touchdown catch, which gave the Wildcats a 35-24 lead.
Brunswick rallied and retook the lead, 41-40, early in the fourth quarter. But with the Wildcats facing second-and-3 from their own 16, Mitchell caught a pass, then got by a couple of defenders, and took off running down the field. Mitchell raced all the way to the Brunswick 17 before a defender finally caught up to him. Two plays after Mitchell’s 67-yard reception, Whilden threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Rome, tying the score at 48-48.
Mitchell’s final catch of the night was a 16-yard reception on the final play of regulation.
Valdosta wound up winning the game in the first overtime period.
“It was a big win,” Mitchell said. “I think they were at their best … It was good knowing that we can go out there and beat a team at their best.”
For much of the night, Mitchell was covered by Brunswick cornerback Justin Coleman, a Tennessee commitment who is rated the No. 26 cornerback in the nation by scout.com.
“It was fun (to battle Coleman),” Mitchell said. “I know I’ll probably see him another time (in college). He’s a good player.”
Mitchell has scholarship offers from pretty much every major program in the Southeast. National champion Alabama, Florida and Georgia are his three favorites right now. Scout.com rates Mitchell the No. 13 cornerback in the nation, while rivals.com has him as the No. 11 safety in the country.
Mitchell and the Wildcats host Robert E. Lee High from Montgomery, Ala. this Friday at 8 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
