Doris Buchanan Chappelle
Doris Buchanan Chappelle, daughter of Wilford Gordon and Aldo Traywick Buchanan late of Day, Florida, died September 7, 2010 at her home in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. In the late 1940’s she taught English at Lafayette High School before moving to Jacksonville where she worked in the personnel department of the Florida Department of Public Welfare. After early retirement from the state she worked for the Duval County school system teaching in middle school. Previously married until 1950 to Leon Edward Koon of Mayo, an Army Veteran of WWII, she remarried in 1958 to George Earnest Chappelle, a retired Washington, D.C. police officer and heavy equipment operator. They lived together until George Chappelle’s death in 1981.
Throughout her life Mrs. Chappelle valued the friendship and affection of her former in-laws Ed and Vanilla Koon of Mayo and particularly that of her brothers-in-law, Donald, Floyd and Perry Koon and sister-in-law, Loretta Koon Renfrow.
One of Doris Chappelle’s last acts was to insure the preservation of her home of 45 years on Fort George Island by selling it for inclusion in the state park system in the barrier island chain protecting the Atlantic coast of Florida.
Her faith in Christ was her testimony until the end.
She is survived by a son, Leo and his wife Dorothy Smith Chappelle. Interment of the cremated remains will be at a later date in the Gordon and Aldo Buchanan plot at Pleasant Grove Cemetery outside Buckville, Florida.
