The Hahira Fire Department recently received a grant for an emergency alert system.
Hahira Fire Chief Dwight Bennett said the department was awarded an $18,459 grant for a severe weather siren through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“This system will allow us the ability to give our citizens warning of any possible weather hazards in our area,” Bennett said. “It’s another proactive step our department is taking to look after our citizens.”
Currently Hahira operates on the code red automated telephone system which alerts citizens when bad weather is approaching. Bennett said the current system is not guaranteed because some people may not have phone service or may be away from their phones during the alert.
The severe weather siren is due to be installed within three months.
