Blazer basketball picked to finish second in GSC East

The Valdosta State men’s basketball team has been picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference East Division, according to a vote by the league coaches.

The Blazers garnered 20 total points in the voting, including one first-place vote, three second-place nods and one third-place vote. Alabama-Huntsville, which tied VSU as the GSC East co-champions in 2009-10, earned five first-place votes, and finished first in the voting with the maximum 25 points. North Alabama was third with 16 points, followed by West Florida (13), West Georgia (10) and West Alabama (6).
Alabama-Huntsville was also picked to win the Gulf South Conference tournament by six coaches. Four coaches picked Arkansas Tech to be the league champion, while Christian Brothers and Valdosta State each had two votes.
VSU guard Christian Hunter was one of six GSC East players to earn preseason All-GSC honors. Hunter played in all 33 games in 2009-10, and averaged 8.5 points per game for the Blazers.
Valdosta State tips off its 2010-11 schedule on Nov. 12, when it hosts Saint Leo in the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Challenge at The Complex. The Challenge will feature eight games over the course of two days.
VSU will also play Rollins on Nov. 13. VSU and Rollins met in the South Region championship game last season.
