Lady Blazers fall to ASU

Valdosta State’s women’s basketball team fell to 4-5 with a 70-66 loss to Albany State on Friday.

Albany State went on a 6-0 run late in the game, and took the lead for good, 63-59.

VSU’s Brittany Daniels ended the run with two free throws. The Golden Rams answered with a basket, but Sczeny Hartry came right back with a runner in the lane to pull VSU within two, 65-63, with 1:09 left to play.

Jennifer Harper hit the next shot to give Albany State a four-point lead. After that, Valdosta State fouled Kourtney Alexander, who made both free throws.

Brittany Ferguson answered with a three-pointer to pull the Lady Blazers within three, 69-66, with 5.6 seconds left. But Albany State made a late free throw to seal the win.

Albany State jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but Valdosta State fought back and tied it at 20-20 on Ferguson’s coast-to-coast basket.

Late in the first half, Ferguson scored six consecutive points on fast breaks to help VSU grab a one-point lead, 35-34, at the half.

In the first half, Ferguson had 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

The teams continued to jockey back and forth in the second half. Shakeda Richie made several big shots that either tied the score or gave VSU the lead.

But in the end, Albany State came away with the win.

Ferguson led the Lady Blazers with 20 points. She also pulled down 13 rebounds.

Hartry scored 13 points and had six assists. She also had four steals and three rebounds. Richie finished with 10 points, while Daniels added nine points and nine rebounds.

Symone Wilkerson led Albany State with 13 points. Callie Hamilton added 12 points.

Valdosta State outrebounded Albany State 39-26, but VSU turned the ball over 27 times.

The Lady Blazers will host Fort Valley State on Sunday.
