WJEM 1150 AM/96.1 FM The Jock made its debut two weeks ago, broadcasting ESPN Radio over the airwaves all day, every day in Valdosta.

The stations are owned and run by Scott James, who also runs his own news talk station, Talk 92.1 FM.

For James, owning his own sports station has been a lifetime in the making, and he’s thrilled he finally has it.

“I love it,” James said. “It’s like my rock station in a talk world.”

The Jock is located across the building from James’ Talk 92.1 studio. The room used to be his office, but he gladly cleared it out to make room for his new station, which has the slogan “Valdosta’s real sports radio.”

Now Valdostans can listen to sports all day for the first time since Black Crow Media’s 1450 AM broadcast ESPN Radio 24/7.

Popular shows like Mike and Mike in the Morning, The Herd with Colin Cowherd and the Scott Van Pelt Show are ESPN Radio’s headline shows, and can now be heard locally.

There’s also a growing list of local shows. The local headliner is the Big A and JD Show with Adam Smith and Jeff Davis. The show airs every weekday from 3-6 p.m.

Davis, 49, and Smith, 23, previously worked on the radio in the fall, hosting the High School Football Tailgate Show. The pair found an odd chemistry with their difference in age and opinions on sports, and they believe it’ll make for an entertaining drive time show.

“We don’t want to be the normal sports talk show,” Davis said. “We write things down to talk about, but if we go off topic, that’s OK. We want to be different.”

Added Smith, “We want the show to be about random acts of sports. We want to keep the show exciting.”

Other local shows include the Ed Hooper Show on Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m., the Adam MacDonald Show coming soon on Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. and the Loran Smith Show on Thursdays. Smith is the Georgia Bulldogs’ legendary radio sideline reporter.

Other local specialty shows will find a home on The Jock. Davis will interview Valdosta football players Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome on Jan. 20, and the two will make verbal commitments to college.

“We want to be the source on everything local,” James said.

The Jock will also air the Atlanta Falcons’ games and the Atlanta Braves’ games.

“It’s great,” James said. “Someone yelled at me from an intersection the other day and said, ‘Thanks for my ESPN.’”

The Jock studio is a sight in itself. Davis, James and Smith have filled it with sports memorabilia. There’s signed VSU gear, football helmets from nearly every local school and jerseys from local schools. The desk with the equipment is high, and the tall chairs give the room a feeling of being in a bar. It’s the perfect setting to talk sports.

Fans will be able to get a look at the studio during the Big A and JD Show. A webcam will stream the show live on The Jock’s website, www.thejock1150.com. The station’s website will stream live audio.
