VSU men’s tennis defeats Embry Riddle

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State Tennis hosted Embry Riddle Saturday and earned a split decision.

The Blazers continued their stellar season with another win to move to 12-1 on the year with a 6-3 win while the Lady Blazers fall to 3-11 with a 9-0 loss.
The VSU men started strong in doubles play with wins in the top two spots. No. 2 Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen squeaked one out against Chris Freeman and David Spennare, 9-8. In the second spot, No. 11 Philip Pakebusch and Luis Loeffler won more convincingly, 8-3, over Simon Felix and Peter Francis.
Bernhard Wallner and Otto Lenhart fell in the third spot to Adrian Bayh and Istvan Bolgar, 8-5. Wallner, however, was able to get a win in singles against Bayh.
After taking the first set, 6-4, Wallner was up 4-1 in the second when Bayh retired.
In No. 4 and No. 5 singles, the Blazers dropped two points. Konstantin Kutschenko fell to No. 13 Simon Felix, 7-5, 6-4, in the fourth spot while Lenhart dropped to No. 23 David Spennare, 6-4, 6-3, in the fifth slot.
No. 19 Dueren, No. 30 Hansen and No. 31 Loeffler all took wins in the top three singles spots. Dueren put away Freeman, 6-4, 6-3, while Hansen beat Patrick Besch, 6-3, 6-4.

Loeffler survived the closest match of the day. After dropping the first set to No. 15 Francis, he rebounded to win the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Lady Blazers found Embry Riddle to be a bit tougher. Second and third doubles both fell by a score of 8-0. No. 19 Alina Nagel and Sarah Braun put up a fight to win five games, but it wasn’t enough as Ekaterina Kamendova and Rocio Frej won the top doubles slot, 8-5.
Singles play was much of the same. Braun played VSU’s closest match, but fell to Kamendova, 6-4, 7-5. The Lady Blazers dropped the other five singles points as well to fall 9-0.
Both tennis teams will be in action next weekend in Montgomery, Ala. at the Gulf South Conference tournament.
