Gymnasts excel at YMCA nationals

TOLEDO, Ohio — Five members of the Valdosta YMCA gymnastics team competed at the 2011 YMCA Gymnastics National Championships on Wednesday, and all of them excelled.
Alyssa Williams became a national champion, taking first place in the all-around in the Junior Division with a score of 36.025. She took second on the vault with a 9.30, third on the balance beam with a 9.075, third on the floor exercise with a 9.325 and sixth on the uneven bars with an 8.325.
Taylor Eakin earned the national championship in the floor exercise in the Senior Division, with a score of 9.475. Eakin finished second in the all-around with a score of 35.05. She also placed sixth on the balance beam (with an 8.55) and the uneven bars (scoring 8.025), and was seventh on the vault with a 9.00.
Brooke Perry was the Junior Division uneven bars champion, scoring an 8.65. Perry also took third on the vault with a 9.20 and sixth in the all-around with a 34.4.
Rachel Fricker finished third in the floor exercise with an 8.50 and eighth in the all-around with a 34.675. Fricker was also competing in the Junior Division.
In the Children’s Division, Grace Perry finished third in the nation with an all-around score of 34.85. She took second in the floor exercise with an 8.80.
Nearly 2,000 gymnasts from across the country competed at the 2011 YMCA Gymnastics National Championships, which were held at the SeaGate Convention Center in Toledo.
The opening ceremonies were held at Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball team.
