Live Oak Partnership and the Suwannee County Tourism Development Council worked together to sponsor the first annual Flea Across Florida, Florida’s longest yard sale, 272 miles to be exact, scheduled for Friday through Sunday on US 90.
“Flea Across Florida will bring people and business into town,” Flea Across Florida Chairman Barney Everett said. “So let’s work and make this a huge success.”
Everett expects about 150-175 booths in Live Oak alone. There are already 80 people registered. People can set up a booth anywhere along US 90 as long as they own or have permission to use the property. Participants who wish to join the longest yard sale in Florida can register and pay $35 for an official Flea Across Florida spot.
Each town along the corridor has official yard sale areas. The official plots will draw more crowds Everett mentioned. He said that people are going to be drawn to areas that have more booths in one spot versus randomly spread out.
“The people on Highway 90 are suffering. When you go into these little towns there are a lot of empty store fronts,” Everett said. “We want to get people off Interstate 10 and back onto Highway 90.”
There are many other extended yard sales, such as the 127 Corridor Sale. It is the world’s longest sale stretching 675 miles from Hudson, Mich. to Gadsden, Ala., and Peaches to Beaches in Georgia is a 112 mile sale.
“I thought why not, if these little towns can do it, why not here in Historic Live Oak,” Everett said. “We are going to have people from Georgia and Alabama that have never heard of Live Oak, putting it on the map for people that like to shop at collectible stores.”
Communities participating in the 272 mile yard sale, in order along Hwy. 90 are Live Oak, Madison, Chipley, Monticello, Marianna, Quincy, Tallahassee, Bonifay, DeFuniak Springs, Crestview, Milton, Pace and Pensacola.
The event fee will be used for advertising and expenses for next year’s sale.
The sale is from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information call Everett at 386-364-1006 or visit FleaAcrossFlorida.com.
