The Valdosta State Blazers will take on the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils this Saturday in Monticello, Ark.
The game will mark the final time the two teams will meet in regular season play, as the Boll Weevils have moved to the Great America Conference.
Following last seasons narrow victory over the Boll Weevils, Valdosta State went on to the NCAA Division II playoffs, while the Boll Weevils finished the year with just a 4-6 record, dropping two of their final three games of the season.
So far, in 2011, the Boll Weevils have been up and down, as they stand with a 2-2 record.
Another loss for the Boll Weevils, could already eliminate them from postseason contention.
The Valdosta Daily Times made numerous attempts to contact Arkansas-Monticello head coach Hud Jackson, however did not receive a return phone call for the Times’ weekly opponent scouting report. Despite the no return phone call, here is a scouting report on the Boll Weevils.
Arkansas-Monticello saw both of their wins come at home, beginning the season with a 38-31 victory over Arkansas Tech University. UAM followed up the week one victory with a 48-0 beatdown of Texas College the following week.
Following their two home games to begin the season, UAM traved for an in-state, and conference, matchup against Ouachita Baptist. The Tigers of OBU remained perfect on the season and handed UAM their first loss of the season, coming in 38-20 fashion.
Last weekend, the Boll Weevils made a trip to Carrollton, to take on the West Georgia Wolves. Despite 200 yards of offense at halftime, the Boll Weevils managed just five points in the 21-5 loss. The Boll Weevils dominated the game, statistically, dominating the time of possession and total yards. The Boll Weevils were doomed by a poor red zone percentage, scoring on just one of their four red zone.
For the first time since 2006, the Boll Weevils do not have a dominating starting quarterback, after Scott Buisson graduated. Buisson was a four-year started for UAM and threw for 16 touchdowns a year ago, coming in just nine games.
This season, the Boll Weevils are looking as though they are still looking for the quarterback of the future, as three different quarterbacks have started a game this season. Senior Kyle Manning made the start last weekend against West Georgia, going 25-for-39 for 225 yards with two interceptions.
No matter who is at quarterback for the Boll Weevils, the go-to receiver will be D.J. Stephens. Through the first four games this season, Stephens has recorded a team-high 25 catches for 304 yards while hauling in three receiving touchdowns this season.
Defensively, the Boll Weevils are holding opponents to 304.5 yards per game. Despite last week’s loss to West Georgia, the Boll Weevil defense allowed just 125 total offensive yards, with just 35 coming on the ground.
The Boll Weevils have struggled on third downs this season, converting just 32 percent (17-of-53) of their attempts. Valdosta State, on the other hand, forced seven three-and-outs last week against Southern Arkansas.
