After losing football coaches on back-to-back days last month, Gulf South Conference powers Delta State and North Alabama quickly found replacement coaches.
The two rivals of Valdosta State University named coaches on Monday. Delta State will officially introduce Jamey Chadwell as its newest head coach today in a press conference, while North Alabama introduced the hiring of coaching legend Bobby Wallace at a press conference on Tuesday.
Chadwell, 35, will replace Ron Roberts, who guided the Statesmen to a 47-16 record across his five seasons before departing to S.E. Louisiana State University. Chadwell spent the last three seasons as the head coach of North Greenville, where he quickly built the Crusader program into one of the region’s top teams.
In his three seasons as head coach at NGU, Chadwell amassed a 22-14 record, with 20 wins coming across the last two seasons.
With expectations at an all-time high heading into the 2011 season for the Crusaders, Chadwell engineered an 11-3 season, advancing all the way to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals before losing to Delta State, 28-23. NGU accomplished the feat with a nearly unstoppable spread-option attack that averaged 40.1 points per game and 434.1 yards of total offense.
A believer in a well-rounded approach to leading a program, Chadwell implemented an offseason leadership and community service program at NGU that paid tremendous dividends to the staff, program and school. He also delivered on his promise to improve academics within the program, by increasing the team GPA each year.
Prior to his time at NGU, Chadwell solidified himself as one of the nation’s top young offensive minds at Charleston Southern University, a member of NCAA Division I-FCS. From 2004-08, he served as an assistant coach at the university where he was in charge of recruiting. He helped the Bucs claim the 2005 Big South Conference championship.
Chadwell began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater ETSU in 2000. From 2000-23, the former Anderson County High School star worked with quarterbacks, tight ends and running backs while assisting with recruiting and offensive game planning.
As for Bobby Wallace, he returns to coaching after enjoying retirement for one season. He replaces Terry Bowden, who departed North Alabama after three seasons in which he led the Lions to a combined 29-9 record and three straight playoff appearances.
Wallace’s hire at UNA marks the second time the legendary coach will serve as the head guy for the Lion program. He led the Lions to three-straight NCAA Division II National Championships from 1993-95. Wallace’s championship years was filled with just one loss, as his teams racked up 40 wins across the three seasons.
Altogether, Wallace posted an impressive 82-36-1 record with the Lions, a mark that led to his hiring at Division I-FBS Temple. Wallace’s success at North Alabama failed to transfer over at Temple, as the now 57-year old struggled to win games. The Owls posted just 19 wins across eight seasons.
Despite struggling at Temple, Wallace found his way back to the Gulf South Conference, a place where he has been named Coach of the Year on three separate occasions. In 2006, Wallace was hired as the head coach at West Alabama.
Despite posting a 26-30 record with the Lions, Wallace is credited with turning around the UWA program, which made an appearance in the 2009 Division II playoffs. The Lions also made the playoffs in 2011 under the direction of new head coach Will Hall. One of Wallace’s biggest wins at UWA came on his final night as the head coach of the program. The Tigers upset heavily favored Valdosta State 24-21, a result that cost the Blazers the No. 2 seed in the South Region.
