VSU football has 3 named All-American

Three Valdosta State football players have received All-American honors, while three more tallied All-Super Region Two honors, according to announcements made by D2Football.com and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette on Thursday.

Junior offensive tackle Ryan Schraeder, who had previously garnered All-American honors from the American Football Coach’s Association, was tabbed second team All-America by D2Football.com, while also receiving second team All-Region honors from Football Gazette. Meanwhile, fellow junior offensive tackle Edmund Kugbila tallied third team All-America and first team All-Region honors from the Football Gazette, while receiving Honorable Mention All-American recognition from D2Football.com.

Senior safety Harrison Dreiling rounded out the All-America honorees, as he received Honorable Mention by the Football Gazette. Dreiling finished the 2011 season second on the Blazer squad with 86 tackles while also registering three interceptions and four passes broken up. The Augusta, Kan. native joined Kugbila on the publication’s first team All-Region list.

Four additional Blazers earned Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Region honors. Junior offensive guard Mesh Wokomaty, sophomore defensive tackle Lawrence Virgil and senior punter Jack Fulford garnered second team recognition, while junior cornerback Matt Pierce was named third team All-Region.

Virgil, who moved from tight end to defensive tackle prior to the start of the season, tallied 30 tackles on the season and led the Blazers with 5.0 sacks among his 8.5 tackles for loss. Virgil also forced three fumbles on the year and blocked a kick.

Fulford closed out a stellar career, as he averaged 41.9 yards per punt. Pierce tallied 43 tackles, three interceptions and eight passes broken up.

Overall, three of Valdosta State’s five starting offensive linemen garnered either first or second team All-Region honors this year.
