Valdosta State’s tennis teams swept Georgia Southwestern on Monday at the VSU tennis courts.

The Lady Blazers defeated the Lady Hurricanes 9-0, while the defending Division II national champion Blazers beat Georgia Southwestern 7-2.

The Lady Blazers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three doubles victories. VSU’s Michelle Fischer and Juliana Boehm defeated Victoria Ondo and former Valdosta High standout Carly Cangelosi 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Alina Nagel and Sarah Braun won the No. 2 doubles match 8-0 over Mollie McGowan and Ginny Jones. Maja Ehses and Tina Trautmann beat Kalie Douberly and Melinda Vansant 8-2, in the third spot.

Then all six Lady Blazers won their singles matches. In the No. 1 singles match, Fischer defeated Cangelosi 6-0, 6-0. Boehm beat Douberly 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Ehses beat Mollie McGowan, 3-6, 6-1 (2) at No. 3 singles.

In the No. 4 singles match, Nagel cruised past Ondo, 6-1, 6-2. Trautmann beat Jones 6-2, 6-1 in the fifth spot. Jessica Tuggle, playing in the sixth position, beat Vansant 6-3, 6-4.

In the men’s match, Georgia Southwestern earned the first doubles point, when Joseph Bjerregaard and Yvan Roelle won 8-5 over Tammo Haake and Niklas Herbring. But Valdosta State’s No. 2 doubles team, Konstantin Kutschenko and Sebastian Jasyk, beat Ryan Bartz and Jake Koonce 8-0, and the Blazers’ No. 3 team, Santiago Vidales and Nicolas Kusy, outlasted Valentine Demande and Evgeny Vinogradov 8-6.

In the No. 1 singles match, Kutschenko won 6-1, 6-1 over Stephen Moore, another former Valdosta High star. Herbring beat Bjerregaard 6-1, 6-3. Kusy beat Roelle 6-2, 7-6 (6) at No. 3 singles.

Jasyk beat Bartz 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles match. Haake rebounded to beat Matt Vansant 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Georgia Southwestern’s Koonce won 6-2, 6-0 over Vidales.

The Blazers and Lady Blazers will travel to Miami Shores, Fla. on Saturday to face Barry.
