VSU tennis falls to Barry, Lynn

The Valdosta State Blazers, the top ranked team in the nation, fell to No. 2 Barry Saturday and then turned around and fell to Lynn Sunday. The Lady Blazers also fell to Barry and Lynn.

Barry sweeps VSU

The top ranked Blazers fell to Barry by way of sweep. The Buccaneers started with all three doubles points and finished with all the singles points for a 9-0 sweep. Meanwhile, the Lady Blazers took a single doubles point, but, in the end, fell, 8-1.

Teams of Christian Hansen and Tammo Haake, Konstantin Kutschenko and Sebastian Jasyk as well as Niklas Herbring and Nicola Kusy all feel to open in an early 3-0 deficit for VSU.

Hansen and Haake fell, 8-4, to Francisco Sigaud and Fabian Groetsch. Kutschenko and Jasyk challenged Marco Mokrzycki and Leo Vivas, but fell in the end, 9-7. Herbring and Kusy were no match for Ollie Lemaitre and Romain Costamagna, falling, 8-3.

Singles proved to be much of the same for the Blazers. In the top spot, No. 21 Hansen fell, 6-3, 4-0, to No. 8 Mokrzycki. In the second slot, No. 50 Kutschenko fell, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, to Groetsch.

Herbring forced a third set against Kevin Sielmann in the third singles spot, but it would not be enough.

Herbring fell, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Jasyk and Haake both fell in straight sets to Vivas and Lemaitre in the fifth and sixth spots, 6-2, 6-4, and 6-3, 6-2, respectively.

Sara Braun and Alina Nagel were the only Lady Blazers to gain a point against a formidable No. 4 Barry team. Braun and Nagel beat Sarah Krohnen and Cristina Valladares, 9-8. Michelle Fischer and Juliana Boehm challenged Vojka Lukic and Linda Fritschken, but fell, 8-6, in the end. In the third doubles spot, Maja Ehses and Tina Trautmann fell to Olivia Matuszak and Julie Stas, 8-5.

Singles was just as tough for the Lady Blazers as Valdosta State dropped every singles match.

The Lady Buccaneers played No. 8 Mona Mansour in the sixth slot against Trautmann and No. 24 Carolina Wendling in the fifth spot against Nagel. Both players won, 6-7, 6-1, 10-5 for Mansour and 6-4, 7-5, for Wendling.

Unranked players finished the first four singles matches. Braun and Fischer dropped matching 6-1 sets to Lukic and Fritschken. Boehm played Stas to matching 6-3 sets, and Ehses fell to Matuszak, 6-3, 6-1.

Blazers drop second straight, fall to Lynn

 BOCA RATON, Fla. — Valdosta State looked to rebound from Saturday’s losses to Barry against Lynn in Boca Raton, Fla. Sunday, but fell short. Against No. 1 Lynn, the Lady Blazers challenged, but fell, 6-3, while the No. 1 Blazers dropped to No. 5 Lynn, 8-1.

Sara Braun and Alina Nagel earned VSU’s first point with an 8-5 victory over Kim Przeszlowski and Ana Kriz in the second doubles spot. Lynn, however, gained a 2-1 advantage after doubles with wins in the top and bottom doubles.

No. 5 Ioana Ivan and Sabine Krause beat Michelle Fischer and Juliana Boehm, 8-1, in the top spot. In third doubles, Andrea Berkova and Roxane Alexandru beat Maja Ehses and Tina Trautmann, 8-2.

Nagel and Tautmann were able to get VSU’s two other points in fifth and sixth singles. After dropping the first set, 2-6, Nagel bounced back against Przeszlowski to earn a 5-4 lead in the second set. At that point, Przeszlowski retired.

Trautmann won her point the more traditional way, with a two-set victory. She beat Aleks Vukadinovic, 6-4, 6-3.

The top four singles did not go as well for Valdosta State. No. 5 Ivan beat Fischer, 6-2, 6-1, while Berkova beat Braun, 6-4, 6-3. No. 30 Krause took down Boehm, 6-0, 6-3, and Kriz beat Ehses by mirrored sets, 6-3, 6-0.

The loss drops the Lady Blazers to 2-2. Meanwhile, the Blazers also fell to 2-2 with an 8-3 loss to No. 5 Lynn.

The only point for Valdosta State came in the second singles. No. 21 Christian Hansen took down No. 12 Vlad Cirla in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. After that, there wasn’t much good news for VSU.

The Blazers dropped all the doubles points to Lynn. Hansen and Tammo Haake took on No. 4 Cirla and Amaury Van Haelen while Sebastian Jasyk and Konstantin Kutschenko face No. 8 Luca Pavanelli and Will Wolfer. Both Valdosta State teams lost, 8-5. Meanwhile, Niklas Herbring and Nicola Kusy fell to George Laffey and Max Kouyate, 8-2. Lynn was equally successful in singles play. No. 5 Wolfer took down No. 50 Kutschenko in three sets at the top spot in singles.

After dropping the first set, 6-3, Kutschenko rebounded to take the second in dominating fashion, 6-1. Kutschenko, however, could not keep the momentum as Wolfer went on to win, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

No. 49 Pavanelli beat Herbring, 7-5, 6-2, in the third singles spot while Van Haelen and Benji Kendall defeated Kusy and Haake in the fifth and sixth singles spot. Kusy fell, 6-2, 6-4, while Haake dropped, 6-2, 6-1.

Jasyk put up a fight in the fourth slot, winning the first set in a tiebreaker and pushing Kouyate to a 6-4 win in the second set. Kouyate took the tiebreaking third set to win, 6-7 (0-7), 6-4, 10-8.
