Suwannee County Fair starts this Friday

Once again the Suwannee County Fair is upon us with the opening day this Friday. The Suwannee County Fair Association invites everyone to attend and promises there will be something for everyone. The week of the fair is scheduled for March 30-April 7 and accents a 97 year tradition in Suwannee County.

Throughout the week of the fair, the Suwannee County Coliseum will be filled with exhibits and everyone is encouraged to view the breathtaking art displays while there.

Out on the midway, the joyful noise of children screaming with excitement will fill the night air as they brave the rides. Others will savor the aroma of fair food that can be replicated nowhere, before finally giving in to satisfy their fair time appetites. Funnel cakes, the famous Lions Club hamburgers, cotton candy, candy apples and kettle corn can surely be found throughout the festive week.

In addition to the midway rides, exhibits and food, fairgoers will find plenty of entertainment and animals to enjoy.

Friday’s entertainment will feature the Rusty Groove Band at 7 p.m. Everyone is also encouraged to watch the ranch sorting competition at the Bob Holmes Arena. Ranch sorting registration begins at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, from noon until 4 p.m., there will kid’s craft day activities. Another highlight for Saturday is the Dairy Costume Contest at 1 p.m.. This has become one of the most cherished events during the week of the fair. The Miss Suwannee County pageant and Pee Wee Dairy Show will take place at 2p.m. To round out the day’s events, the Suwannee County Fair will present a demolition derby at 7 p.m.

Sunday has been designated as Family and Hispanic Day for the 2012 Suwannee County Fair. All day armbands may be purchased for $10 and entertainment will be provided by D.C.O. Musical, beginning at 4 p.m.

The Youth Goat and Heifer Show, along with a pedal tractor pull will take place Monday evening at 6 p.m. Gateway City Big Band will be the featured entertainment that evening.

Senior citizens are encouraged to take advantage of free admission and lunch On Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Youth Heifer Show will be at 6 p.m., with the Barbershop Quartet harmonizing at 7 p.m. Armbands are only $10 per person when you bring a friend on April 3.

Anyone who didn’t get enough of the pedal tractor pull on Monday will have another chance to enjoy another one at 7 p.m., Wed., April 4. Tracy Starling and Friend Band will also be the featured entertainment that evening.

Student Day will be April 5, with free admission from 5-8 p.m. for students ages six to 18. The FSU Cheerleaders are scheduled to perform, sign autographs and take photos at 7 p.m.

Everyone is encouraged to come out Fri., April 6 and take advantage of the final chance to see a pedal tractor pull. The event will be held at 7 p.m. and the Justin Case Band will perform at 8 p.m. According to Suwannee County Fair Manager Lynn Touchton, the Fair Board’s hog and steer show will be held at 6 p.m.,

The 14th Annual 5K Run-a-Fair and Walk/Talk will begin at 9 a.m., April 7, with registration at 8 a.m. The hog and steer sale will be held at 12:30 p.m.

Also on April 7 will be a No-Holds-Barred Lawnmower and Side-by-Side Pull that is sure to offer excitement for all.
