The results are in for the Gulf South Conference’s 2011-12 Winter All-Academic Team, and Valdosta State was well represented.

Courtney Mitchell, a unanimous selection, and Brittany Ferguson were named to the six-person team.

Six other Lady Blazers joined Mitchell and Ferguson on the 2011-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll.

Mitchell makes her second GSC All-Academic team, and does it this year with the highest grade-point average on the squad, a 3.82 in Health and Physical Education. She was one of just two unanimous selections.

Ferguson joins Mitchell to make Valdosta State one of just two schools with multiple players named to the women’s team.

Ferguson earned a 3.50 as a Middle Grades Education major.

Her athletic credentials are unmatched as Ferguson was a first team All-GSC selection, first team All-Region selection and an All-America Honorable Mention.

Joining Mitchell and Ferguson on the 2011-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll were four Lady Blazer newcomers and two returners.

Senior Sczeny Hartry and sophomore Jordan Waugh were named to the honor roll with 3.11 and 3.31 grade point averages in Criminal Justice and Exercise Physiology respectively.

Newcomers Amber Bond, Brittney Nelson, Brooke Satterfield and Kourtnee Williams also made the list. Nelson and Williams had legitimate shots at making the All-Academic team, but first year players are not eligible.

 Bond earned a 3.06 GPA, Nelson a 3.60, Satterfield a 3.80 and Williams a 3.57.

Bond and Nelson major in Early Childhood Education and Mathematics while freshmen Satterfield and Williams are undecided.

 This group of eight student-athletes helped Valdosta State go all the way to the Sweet Sixteen and finish just three points shy of going to the NCAA Division II’s Elite Eight this past season.
