VSU tennis falls in conference play

Valdosta State had a rough Saturday with both tennis teams falling in Pensacola, Fla. The Lady Blazers lost their first conference match, 6-3, against West Florida, and the Blazers fell to Hawaii Pacific, 5-0. The losses drop the Blazers to 8-7 on the season while the Lady Blazers fall to 8-8 and 5-1 in Gulf South Conference play.

The Lady Blazers were able to snag a point in doubles when Michelle Fischer and Juliana Boehm defeated Barbara Oliveira and Mariana Sonnervig, 8-3 in the second slot. But, at the end of doubles play, Valdosta State trailed, 2-1.

In singles action, Sara Braun and Boehm were the only Lady Blazers to earn a point. Braun beat Sonnervig, 6-4, 6-2, in the second slot while Boehm took down Naomi Higa, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, in the sixth singles spot.

Fischer, Maja Ehses, Tina Trautmann and Alina Nagel all fell in the first, third, fourth and fifth spots.

Trautmann, however, did put up quite a battle. She won the first set, 7-6, but dropped the next two, 6-4, 6-4.

Both tennis teams will look to rebound against Armstrong Atlantic State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
